Fuel System - Prime

Usage:

D6 B72

------ WARNING! ------

Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.

------ WARNING! ------

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.

NOTICE

Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.

NOTICE

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system components.

Ensure that all adjustments and repairs are performed by authorized personnel that have had the correct training.

After the engine has stopped, wait for 10 minutes to allow the fuel pressure to be purged from the high-pressure fuel lines. After 10 minutes any service or repair can be performed on the fuel lines. If necessary, perform minor adjustments. Repair any leaks from the low-pressure fuel system and from the cooling, lubrication, or air systems. Replace any high-pressure fuel line that has leaked. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Fuel Injection Lines - Remove and Install".

The fuel system must be primed under the following conditions:

  • The primary fuel filter, the secondary fuel filter, and the tertiary fuel filter have been changed.

  • The fuel transfer pump has been changed.

  • The fuel injection pump has been changed.

  • The fuel injectors have been changed.

  • Any fuel lines have been changed.

  • The engine has run out of fuel.

Priming Procedure

Use the following procedure in order to prime using the electric priming pump:

NOTICE

Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.

  1. Gain access to the fuel priming pump.

  2. Connect a drain hose in place of the fuel return line to the fuel tank. Place the other end of the drain hose into a suitable container in order to catch the fuel. Turn the ignition key to the ON position in order to activate the priming pump.

Note: For engines that are equipped with a manual switch for priming, turn the manual switch to the ON position for priming.

  3. Operate the priming pump until the fuel that flows from the drain hose has no air bubbles. Turn off the priming pump.

  4. Start the engine. If you cannot start the engine, the engine needs more priming. If the engine continues to misfire or to smoke, more priming is necessary.

  5. Run the engine at the LOW IDLE position until the engine runs smoothly.
