Caterpillar engines are identified by serial numbers and by arrangement numbers. These numbers are shown on the engine serial number plate and on the engine information plate. Caterpillar dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. The information provided on the plates permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.

The engine serial number plate is located on the rear right side of the engine block.

The engine information plate is located on the intake manifold near the front of the right side of the engine.
