NOTICE

Ensure that all adjustments and repairs that are carried out to the fuel system are performed by authorized personnel that have the correct training.

Before beginning ANY work on the fuel system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information and High Pressure Fuel Lines" for safety information.

Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Cleanliness of Fuel System Components" for detailed information on the standards of cleanliness that must be observed during ALL work on the fuel system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. The engine can start automatically. Ensure that the power supply is isolated before any service or repairs is performed.

  2. Turn the fuel supply to the OFF position.

  3. Remove tube assembly (6) from primary fuel filter (1) and fuel priming pump (5). Use Tooling (A) to cap the tube assembly.

  4. Remove O-ring seal (2) (not shown) and O-ring seal (8) (not shown) from the connection on primary fuel filter (1) and fuel priming pump (5). Use Tooling (A) to cap the primary fuel filter and fuel priming pump.

  5. Loosen the tube nut on tube assembly (3).

  6. Disconnect harness assembly (7) from fuel priming pump (5).

  7. Loosen the locking nuts on clamps (9) in order to allow fuel priming pump (5) to be removed. Remove the fuel priming pump from the clamps.

  8. Remove Isolator rubbers (10) (not shown).

  9. Remove O-ring seal (4) (not shown) from the connection on fuel priming pump (5). Use Tooling (A) to cap the fuel priming pump and tube assembly (3).

  10. If necessary, follow Step 10.a through Step 10.c to disassemble fuel priming pump (5).

    1. Remove connection (11) from fuel priming pump (5). Remove O-ring seal (12) (not shown).

    2. Make temporary mark on elbow connection (15). Loosen lock nut (14) and remove elbow connection from fuel priming pump (5).

    3. Remove O-ring seal (13) (not shown) from elbow connection (15).

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure that the fuel priming pump is clean and free from wear or damage. If necessary, replace the fuel priming pump as an assembly.

    Illustration 3g03711251

  2. If necessary, follow Step 2.a through Step 2.b to assemble fuel priming pump (5).

    1. Install a new O-ring seal (12) (not shown) to connection (11). Install the connection to fuel priming pump (5). Tighten the connection to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

    2. Install a new O-ring seal (13) (not shown) to elbow connection (15). Install the elbow connection to fuel priming pump (5) and align with temporary marks. Use a suitable tool to hold the elbow connection and tighten lock nut (14) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

Note: Ensure that the elbow connection is still aligned to the temporary marks after the locking nut has been tightened.

  3. Remove cap from fuel priming pump (5). Install a new O-ring seal (4) (not shown) to the connection on the fuel priming pump. Ensure that the O-ring seal is correctly installed into the recess of the connection.

  4. Remove the cap tube assembly (3). Install fuel priming pump (5) to clamps (9). Tighten the tube nut on the tube assembly hand tight. Ensure that the fuel priming pump is correctly orientated.

  5. Position isolators rubbers (10) (not shown) between clamps (9) and fuel priming pump (5). Tighten the locking nuts on clamps (9) in order to hold the fuel priming pump in position.

Note: Ensure that the isolators rubbers are still correctly positioned between the clamps and the fuel priming pump after the locking nuts have been hand tightened.

  6. Remove the caps primary fuel filter (1) and fuel priming pump (5).

  7. Install a new O-ring seal (2) (not shown) and a new O-ring seal (8) (not shown) to primary fuel filter (1) and fuel priming pump (5). Ensure that the O-ring seals are correctly installed into the recesses of the connections.

  8. Remove the caps from tube assembly (6). Install the tube assembly to primary fuel filter (1) and fuel priming pump (5). Tighten the tube nuts on tube assembly (6) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

  9. Tighten the tube nut on tube assembly (3) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

  10. Tighten the locking nuts for clamps (9) to a torque of 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  11. Connect harness assembly (7) to fuel priming pump (5).

  12. Connect all electrical supplies system to the engine and the control systems.

  13. Turn the fuel supply to the ON position.

  14. Remove the air from the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.
