NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal components.

  2. Drain the engine oil from the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct procedure.

  3. Remove four bolts (1) and the washers that hold elbow assembly (2) to oil pan assembly (3). Disconnect wire harness (4) at the electrical connection.

  4. Remove two bolts (9) and the washers that hold pump inlet elbow (10) to engine oil pump (5). Remove four bolts (8) and the washers that hold oil pan elbow (7) to oil pan assembly (3). Remove pump inlet elbow (10), tube (6), and oil pan elbow (7) from oil pan assembly (3) as a unit.

  5. Disconnect two hose assemblies (11) and (12) from plug adapter (13).

  6. Disconnect two hose assemblies (14) and (15) from steering valve (16). Place two hose assemblies (14) and (15) aside.

  7. Remove two bolts (17) and the washers that hold accumulator charging valve (18) to the frame assembly. Place accumulator charging valve (18) aside.

  8. Remove two bolts (20) and the washers that hold clamp assembly (21) to adapter (19).

  9. Remove two bolts (23), the washers, the spacers, and the clips that hold tube (22) to oil pan (24).

  10. Remove two bolts (27) and the washers that hold clamp assembly (26) to base adapter (25). Place tube (22) aside.

  11. Position Tool (A) (not shown) or a suitable jack under oil pan assembly (3).

  12. Remove nine bolts (28) and the washers that hold oil pan (24) to oil pan assembly (3).

  13. Put identification marks on nine bolts (30) and 22 bolts (31). Remove nine bolts (30) and 22 bolts (31) that hold oil pan assembly (3) to the engine.

  14. Slowly lower oil pan assembly (3) and five gaskets (32) (not shown) from the engine. Remove integral seal (29) (not shown) when oil pan assembly (3) is separated from oil pan (24). The weight of oil pan assembly (3) is 65 kg (143 lb).

  15. Position oil pan assembly (3) on a suitable work bench, as shown. Remove 15 bolts (33) and the washers that hold plate (34) to oil pan assembly (3).

  16. Remove tube (35) from oil screen housing (36). Remove oil screen handle (37) and the suction screen assembly (not shown) from oil screen housing (36) as a unit.

  17. Remove four bolts (38) and the washers that hold oil screen housing (36) to adapter assembly (39). Remove oil screen housing (36) from adapter assembly (39).

  18. Remove four bolts (40) and the washers that hold adapter assembly (39) to oil pan assembly (3).

  19. Remove level switch (41) from oil pan assembly (3).

  20. Remove the elbow (not shown) and the hose (not shown) from plug adapter (13). Remove two bolts (42) that hold plug adapter (13) to oil pan assembly (3). Remove plug adapter (13) from oil pan assembly (3). Remove pipe plug (43) from oil pan assembly (3).

Installation Procedure

  1. Verify that all of the components are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation. Check all of the components and all of the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  2. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  3. Install pipe plug (43) to oil pan assembly (3). Position plug adapter (13) to oil pan assembly (3), as shown. Install two bolts (42) that hold plug adapter (13) to oil pan assembly (3). Install the elbow (not shown) and the hose (not shown) to plug adapter (13).

  4. Install liquid level switch assembly (41) to oil pan assembly (3), as shown. Tighten liquid level switch assembly (41) to a torque of 33 ± 4 N·m (24 ± 3 lb ft). Ensure that the arrows of liquid level switch assembly (40) are pointing upward.

  5. Position adapter assembly (39) onto oil pan assembly (3), as shown. Install four bolts (40) and the washers that hold adapter assembly (39) to oil pan assembly (3).

  6. Position oil screen housing (36) to adapter assembly (39). Install four bolts (38) and the washers that hold oil screen housing (36) to adapter assembly (39).

  7. Install oil screen handle (37) and the suction screen assembly (not shown) to oil screen housing (36) as a unit. Install tube (35) to oil screen housing (35).

  8. Position plate (34) to oil pan assembly (3), as shown. Install 15 bolts (34) and the washers that hold plate (34) to oil pan assembly (3).

  9. Tighten the bolts (X) first. Tighten the remaining bolts in the sequence, as shown.

    Note: Ensure that the mating surface of the oil pan is clean and free of foreign material prior to installing the gasket.

  10. Install five gaskets (32) to oil pan assembly (13), as shown. Apply Loctite 595 or 138-8436 Liquid Gasket to oil pan (13) as it is necessary.

  11. Apply Loctite 595 or 138-8436 Liquid Gasket to all the joints of five gaskets (31).

    Note: Ensure that the mating surfaces of the engine are clean and free of foreign materials prior to installing the oil pan assembly.

  12. Position Tool (A) (not shown) or a suitable jack under oil pan assembly (3). Install integral seal (29) to oil pan assembly (3). Slowly raise oil pan assembly (3) and five gaskets (32) to the engine, as shown. The weight of oil pan assembly (3) is 65 kg (143 lb).

  13. Install nine bolts (28) and the washers that hold oil pan assembly (3) to oil pan (24).

  14. Install nine bolts (29) and 22 bolts (30) that hold oil pan assembly (3) to the engine. Apply 4C-9508 Wicking Sealant to 22 bolts (30) after installation, as required.

  15. Position tube assembly (22), as shown. Install two bolts (27) and the washers that hold clamp assembly (26) to base adapter (25).

  16. Install two bolts (23), the washers, the spacers, and the clips that hold tube (22) to oil pan (24).

  17. Install two bolts (20) and the washers that hold clamp assembly (21) to adapter (19).

  18. Position accumulator charging valve (18) to the frame assembly. Install two bolts (17) and the washers that hold accumulator charging valve (18) to the frame assembly.

  19. Connect two hose assemblies (14) and (15) to steering valve (16).

  20. Connect two hose assemblies (12) and (11) to plug adapter (13).

  21. Position pump inlet elbow (10), tube (6), and oil pan elbow (7) to oil pan assembly (3) as a unit. Install four bolts (8) and the washers that hold oil pan elbow (7) to oil pan assembly (3). Install two bolts (9) and the washers that hold pump inlet elbow (10) to engine oil pump (5).

  22. Connect wire harness (4) at the electrical connection. Install four bolts (1) and the washers that hold elbow assembly (2) to oil pan assembly (3).

  23. Fill the engine with engine oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct procedure.

  24. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the correct refill capacity.

End By:

  1. Install the crankcase guards. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chocks (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
