Engine News SEBD9795, 23 July 2012, "New Software Is Used On Certain Tier 3 C18 Industrial Engines". Disregard the previous article. Effectivity has been added, refer to the article that follows.

Description of Change: The new software has an improved rating calibration.

Adaptable To: The new software is a direct replacement for the existing software. Refer to Table 1 for a list of the new and existing software part numbers.

Table 1
New Part Number     Existing Part Number
389-1921     330-9357
397-2695     389-1223

When technicians update Tier 3 C18 Industrial Engines software to either the 389-1921 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp or the 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp, the technician will get a "Personality Module Mismatch" screen and asking for "Reason Code 5" passwords after the power cycle.

Previous software listed ratings 2 and 3 out of the standard order (higher power = higher rating number). Software part numbers 389-1921 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp and 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp place the ratings in the standard order. When updating to these newest files, the order switch will cause a "Personality Module Mismatch" for ratings 2 and 3. Rating 1 should update without a password requirement.

In addition to the rating order change, 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp contains three additional ratings (ratings 4 through 6), with all six ratings implying a specific engine rpm (1800 rpm or 2100 rpm). The additional ratings are intended for factory test purposes only and not expected to show up in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat® ET).

As an example:

The previous software version has the ratings are in this order:

  • Rating # 1: A

  • Rating # 2: C

  • Rating # 3: B

The current 389-1921 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp and 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp ratings are in this order:

  • Rating # 1: A

  • Rating # 2: B

  • Rating # 3: C

If the software is updated to the 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp, there will be three additional ratings:

  • Rating # 4: D

  • Rating # 5: E

  • Rating # 6: F

Reference this publication when requesting factory passwords from your DSN contact. There should be no charge if the before and after ratings are the same, regardless of rating number.

Note: Ignore the additional ratings (Rating 4 through 6) if updating to 397-2695 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp. Ratings 1 through 3 apply to the normal rpm range of 1800 to 2100 rpm rather than 2100 rpm only. If rating 4, rating 5, and rating 6 are selected, these ratings are duplicates of rating 1, rating 2, and rating 3, respectively. This change is effective for serial numbers listed in Table 2.
