Introduction

There have been some isolated reports of excessive blow-by from the engine. This Special Instruction is designed to assist the Caterpillar dealer.

Common Terminology

Blow-by (BBY) is a description used for crankcase gasses that are vented from the engine.

Oil carry-over (OCO) is contained within the blow-by gas. The oil carry-over can be classified as liquid or aerosol (vapor).

Blow-by typically contains oil carry over. Oil carry-over can be divided into two classes based on particle size:

• Drip (visible drips)

• Aerosol (suspended oil drops that create the smoke seen at the crankcase vent)

Oil drips consist of large oil droplets. This type of oil carry-over is easily deposited on surfaces as visible oil.

Aerosol refers to suspended particles, that are smaller than drips but may lead to staining when allowed to condense on adjacent surfaces.

The amount of liquid and aerosol present depends on the separation technology used within the crankcase ventilation system.

Sources of Blow-by and Oil Carry Over

Blow-by gases are a result of leakage into the crankcase via the piston rings, turbocharger seals, valve guides, and auxiliary pumps such as air compressors. Blow-by gases can contain white, blue, or gray vapors but are often invisible. Blow-by gasses also contain moisture that can condense into water drips or visible mist. These water drips or visible mist may be apparent during cold starts or during cold ambient running. The moisture is a result of the combustion process.

Crankcase Breather Systems

All crankcase breather systems contain some form of primary separation that is attached to a secondary venting system.

Primary separation is usually an integral part of the engine, most systems vent from the top cover. The primary separator provides a substantial amount of liquid oil control.

Secondary systems can be divided into three categories:

• Open Circuit Breather (OCB).

• Filtered Open Breather (FOB).

• Closed Circuit Breather (CCB).

Open Circuit Breather

The simplest version of a crankcase breather system consists of a vent hose routed down the side of the engine. This hose does not contribute to further separation and will allow drips to be discharged. Under certain conditions, up to 30 drips per hour can be expected from the open breather system. In certain territories, there may be local legislation that prohibits the use of the open circuit breather.

The routing of the open breather vent hose requires careful consideration to prevent oil being discharged on to surfaces of the application.

Filtered Open Breather

The filtered open breather system uses secondary separation to remove most of the liquid oil that would normally form drips. However, the filtered open breather is not considered to be drip-free. Typically, one or two trips per day would be expected.

The routing of the filtered open breather vent hose also requires some consideration as the gases may cause staining on surfaces.

Closed Circuit Breather

The closed circuit breather system is the only system that can be considered to be drip free. This system vents the crankcase gases into the induction pipe-work. However, this system is not available in all territories for legislative reasons.

Blow-by Rate

Typically, the blow-by flow rate increases with engine speed and load. Reproducing blow-by measurements accurately in the field is challenging and is not always representative of the measurements that would be taken on a test-bed. The apparatus used in the field, often collects the data in a different way to the instruments used in the test cells and should be only used as a reference. Caterpillar recommends that you should consult the Dealer Solution Network (DSN) if there are any concerns with the blow-by data.

In addition, the blow-by rate for a specific speed and load condition may change over time. Changing over time is normal. The blow-by rate is particularly unstable during the early life of the engine. During the early life of the engine, high blow-by rates can be expected. The high blow-by rates will typically start to stabilize after 50 to a 100 hours.

The average blow-by rates for a specific speed and load condition may also grow during the product life. Growing during the product life sometimes can be up to two times, the early life blow-by rate.

Diagnostic Procedures

Note: Blow-by and oil carry-over is a measure of breather performance and not conclusively related to engine condition. Some engines have high blow-by and oil carry over when compared to similar engines, with no detrimental impact on engine life and performance.

• Ensure that the correct specification of lubricating oil is used. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for more information.

• Ensure that the engine oil level is correct. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for more information.

• Many anomalies can be attributed to the measurement process. Allow for 10 to 20 percent error in the readings.

• Identify any additional blow-by generators that may have been installed to the engine. For example compressor pumps. Establish the contribution from that source.

• Extreme ambient can cause measurement anomalies. Sub zero temperatures can cause false readings.

• Ensure that the application has completed at least 50 hours (preferably one 100 hours) of running including high loads.

• Verify that the breather vent drip performance meets the characteristic specified for the breather type.

• Ensure that the air system has maintained adequate control of dirt ingress.

• Ensure that any serviceable breather items have been maintained.

• Contact the Dealer Solution Network (DSN).

• Define the reason for raising a concern over breather performance. For example, excessive drips, vapor, odor, loss of engine performance and increased oil consumption.

• Provide oil samples, crankcase pressure measurements, blow-by measurements, and drip rate data.

Blow-by Rates

Blow-by rates will generally fall between the valves shown in table 1. The number represent Full Load Rated Speed (FLRS) values as measured on a test bed to TP 2/11 (Blow-by Measurement).

This procedure covers the method for measuring blow-by on applications.

Blow-by should be checked at Low Idle, High Idle, and Maximum Stall or double stall.

Note: The equipment must be calibrated and cleaned before and after use.

1. Start the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure. Operate the engine to ensure that the engine has reached normal operating temperature.

2. Install Tooling (A) to the breather hose.

3. Set Tooling (A) to liters per minute (L/min) (2).

4. Set Tooling (A) to "Actual" (1). Setting Tooling (A) to "Actual" measures the mean value. Ensure blow-by meter is reading continuously.

5. Set the engine to run at low idle until blow-by reading is stable. The reading should not fluctuate by more than plus or minus 4 L/min. Record this value.

6. Set the engine to run at high idle until blow-by reading is stable. The reading should not fluctuate by more than plus or minus 4 L/min. Record this value.

7. Set the engine to run at maximum stall until blow-by reading is stable. The reading should not fluctuate by more than plus or minus 4 L/min. Record this value.

To check for peak blow-by:

1. Press "Clear" on Tooling (A).

2. Press "Max" on Tooling (A).

3. Increase engine load until maximum stall has been reached.

4. Log "Max" blow-by that is shown on screen.

Acceptable blow-by limits for the engines are listed in table 4.
