Protecting the 3500B, 3500C, and C280 Marine Engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) from Overcurrent {1408, 1901}

Note: This article only applies to the effectivity that is listed above. The wiring in the power distribution box was changed begining 17February 2010. This procedure is not needed for the more recently built engines.

Welding on a ship has caused excessive current to damage the ECM. The overcurrent damages the return path of the circuit driver for starting. This makes the engine unable to start. For engines that were built prior to 17February 2010, use the following procedure in order to avoid the damage.

  1. Remove power from ECM.

  1. Remove the wire from pin 7 on the J2 connector. Secure the wire and tape off the wire. Refer to Illustration 1 and Illustration 2.

  1. Make sure that the breaker for the secondary ECM is ON. Open the breaker even if a secondary ECM is not present.

  1. Restore power to the ECM.

    The engine should start normally without any diagnostics and the ECM will not need to be replaced.
