Accurate Diagnosis of Turbocharger Failure on Caterpillar Engines {1052, 1053}
- Caterpillar Products:
- All
Note: This procedure only applies to Caterpillar engines that have remanufactured turbochargers.
Inspection Procedure
- Check the inlet of the turbine housing for any foreign objects (1) .

- If any foreign objects are found, then stop the procedure and investigate the root cause of the failure in the engine. Fix the cause of the failure in the engine before replacing the turbocharger. This will avoid future failures of the turbocharger. If no foreign objects are found, then proceed to 3.
- Loosen the nut of the v-band clamp on the turbine housing and remove the clamp.
- Remove the turbine housing and inspect the turbine wheel for damage from foreign objects (2). Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF9085, "Failure Modes of Turbochargers" for an example of damage from foreign objects.

- After inspecting the turbocharger, reassemble the turbine housing and the clamp. tighten the clamp before the final disposition of the turbocharger.
If you determine that the turbocharger failure is caused by damage from foreign objects, then the turbocharger is not the part causing failure. The root cause of the failure should be determined before taking further action.
