Introduction

Two different cylinder head gaskets can be used on the truck engines that are listed above. This Special Instruction lists the gasket that is used by each serial number prefix.

The required parts are 153-9653 Cylinder Head Gasket and 224-5122 Gasket .

Reman uses sawcut and non sawcut castings for 3406E Reman cylinder heads. The sawcut cylinder head requires 224-5122 Gasket . Cylinder heads without sawcuts require the 153-9653 Cylinder Head Gasket . All new production castings contain sawcuts.

Dealers should always use the 224-5122 Gasket when a 10R-5985 Cylinder Head Gp is purchased. The 10R-5984 Cylinder Head Gp may be either a sawcut or non sawcut casting. If the cylinder head does not contain sawcuts dealers should use the 153-9653 Cylinder Head Gasket . Refer to Table 1 for further information for the correct gasket to use with the listed serial numbers.
