Engine Monitoring System

Usage:

3512B NSC

ECM

A comprehensive, programmable engine monitoring system is provided. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) can monitor parameters. The ECM can initiate an action if a specific operating parameter extends beyond the acceptable range. There are three possible actions by the ECM which are available: "WARNING", "DERATE", and "SHUTDOWN". However, not all the actions are available for certain parameters.

The Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to select the desired action by the ECM. Cat ET can be used to program the level for monitoring and the delay times for each action.

Engine Instrument Panel

The engine instrument panel is usually mounted on the engine. The engine instrument panel may be mounted up to 15 m (49 ft) away from the engine. The engine instrument panel includes the following controls:

  • Emergency stop push button

  • Engine Control Switch (ECS)

  • Local speed control (if equipped)

  • Alarm horn

  • ECM ready lamp

  • ECM active lamp

  • Emergency stop indicator

  • Engine overspeed indicator

  • Pyrometer (if equipped)

  • Marine Power Display (MPD)

The following control panel switches are located inside the engine instrument panel:

  • Crank override switch

  • Protection override switch

  • Torque limit switch

  • Throttle control switch

  • Low idle switch

The crank override switch allows the operator to crank the engine with the engine starters. This overrides any other control or any engine protection system.

The protection override switch provides an input for the user to override the engine protection devices.

The torque limit switch enables the torque limiting feature.

The throttle control switch allows engine speed to be controlled from a potentiometer on the panel, if equipped.

The low idle switch provides the ability to control engine rpm. When the switch is enabled, the engine will operate at the low idle rpm that is programmed.

Pyrometer

The engine has a digital pyrometer.

The engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) receives data about the engine's exhaust temperatures. The temperatures are monitored with thermocouples that are connected to an exhaust temperature module. The module broadcasts the data to the ECM via a CAN data link.

Pyrometer

The pyrometer is an electronic scanner for exhaust temperatures. The scanner can monitor 24 points via standard type K thermocouples. An LCD displays the number of the channel and the temperature in °C or °F. The scanner has two switches that can be wired to alarms or relays. The scanner can provide readings, monitoring, and alarms for the temperatures of 20 cylinder exhaust ports and four turbocharger inlets and/or outlets.

The scanner has a microprocessor for processing the input signals. The microprocessor has non-volatile memory for storing programmable parameters and other data. The user interface is a keypad. The following functions are among the uses of the keypad:

  • Change the display of the temperatures to °C or °F.

  • Select automatic display or manual display for the scan.

  • Display a history of channels which have exceeded the setpoints.

  • Change the filter for the display to stabilize the readings for a signal that is fluctuating.

  • Program the temperature setpoints.

  • Lock the keypad to help prevent changing of the non-volatile memory.

  • Calibrate the scanner.

The scanner can monitor temperatures from 0 to 850 °C (32 to 1562 °F). Six temperature setpoints for the alarms can be programmed with the keypad. If an alarm occurs, the scanner has two output switches that can provide a signal to an indicator, a switch, or a relay.

Note: Certain functions of the keypad can be locked to prevent changes to the scanner's non-volatile memory.

"VIEW ALARMS" - This key enables the operator to perform the following activities:

  • View the status of the input for engine rotation.

  • Review the log of the highest cylinder temperature.

  • View the log of the channels that have exceeded the setpoints.

  • Clear the logs.

The logs are helpful in determining the maximum cylinder temperature that has been reached and the thermocouples that have been responsible for activating an alarm.

"SETUP" - This key is used to configure the scanner for the particular installation.

"RESET" - This key acts as a reset for the scanner. The "RESET" key enables the operator to reset the scanner if an alarm occurs. The key is used to clear the output switches.

The "RESET" key can also reset the start-up timer.

"ENTER/ACK" - This key is used for several functions.

Save new data or a new configuration in non-volatile memory.

Acknowledge an active alarm.

Cancel the start-up timer.

"SETPTS" (setpoints) - This key is used to view each of the six setpoints for the alarms. The key is also used to change the setpoints. When the key is pressed, the description of each setpoint and the temperature of the setpoint is displayed.

"ESC" (escape) - This key can be used at any time to return to the normal display. If the "ESC" key is pressed during programming, the revised values are discarded. The configuration returns to the saved values and the normal display is resumed.

Up Arrow and Down Arrow - These keys are used for several different functions.

  • During normal operation, each press of the up arrow key increments the channel one at a time. The down arrow key decreases the channel.

  • Scroll through the selections in the setup mode.

  • Change the values for the filter.

  • Change the values of setpoints.

  • Calibrate the scanner.
