Introduction

The following procedure contains all the required parts and information needed to improve the transmission oil cooler hoses on certain 631K and 637K Wheel Tractor-Scrapers. Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Safety Section

Do not perform any procedure in this special instruction until you have read this special instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures also be observed.

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If the tools, the procedure, the work method, or your actions are not recommended by Caterpillar, ensure that the tools and your actions are safe for you and for others.

Ensure that all personnel are safe when using a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique not recommended by Caterpillar. Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

------ WARNING! ------

Gaseous fuel is present. Personal Injury or Death can result from an open flame or spark igniting the gaseous fuel causing an explosion and/or fire. Always use a gas detector to determine the presence of gaseous fuel when maintaining and servicing. Contact your local gas provider immediately for assistance in the event of a leak.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system components.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Machine Preparation

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, clean the exterior of the component thoroughly. Cleaning the exterior will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

  1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move to an area that is free of machines and personnel.

  2. Park the machine on a level surface.

  3. Apply the service brake to stop the machine. Move the transmission control (lever) to the NEUTRAL position. Move the throttle control to the LOW IDLE position.

  4. Engage the parking brake.

  5. Lower all equipment to the ground. Activate any control locks.

  6. Shut off the engine.

  7. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position and remove the engine start switch key.

  8. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel in the sight of the operator.

  9. Make sure that all hydraulic pressure is released before any component is adjusted. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual , M0064346 , "631K Wheel Tractor-Scrapers" and SEBU9132 , "637K Wheel Tractor-Scrapers" "Safety Messages".
