Brake Cooling Pressure - Check

Usage:

AD22 MW5

------ WARNING! ------

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To help prevent possible injury or death, refer to the information in Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine movement.

Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels to make sure the machine does not move while the parking brakes are disengaged.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Introduction

This information includes the following test:

  • Brake Cooling System

Test Preparation

  1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Engage the parking brake.

  4. Stop the engine.

  5. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  8. Slowly remove hydraulic tank filler cap (2) to relieve any pressure in the hydraulic tank.

Reference: For additional information about the release of hydraulic oil pressure, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

Test Procedure

  1. This test will show if the brake cooling system is operating correctly.

Location of Brake Cooling Test Port (1) is mounted on manifold at rear of front frame.

  2. Remove plug (1) and install a 108-2197 Adapter and a 3J-7354 O-Ring Seal into test port.

  3. Install a 6V-4142 Fitting to the 108-2197 Adapter.

  4. Connect a 177-7861 Hose As and an 8T-0853 Pressure Gauge to the 6V-4142 Fitting.

  5. Start the engine. Make sure that the temperature of the oil is between 79°C (175°F) and 93°C (200°F).

  6. Run the engine at low idle. The pressure reading on the pressure gauge must not be below 14 kPa (2 psi).

  7. Run the engine at high idle. The pressure reading on the pressure gauge must not be above 172 kPa (25 psi).

Note: If this pressure is exceeded, seal damage will result.

  8. If the low idle and high idle pressures are incorrect, check the relief valve (brake oil cooler) pressure setting. Refer Braking System, Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Brake Oil Cooler) - Test and Adjust"

  9. If necessary, repeat Step 2 through Step 7.

  10. Disconnect the 8T-0853 Pressure Gauge from the 6V-4142 Fitting.

  11. Remove the 108-2197 Adapter from the test port. Install plug (1).
