Brake Disc Wear - Check

Usage:

AD22 MW5

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To help prevent possible injury or death, refer to the information in Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine movement.

Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels to make sure the machine does not move while the parking brakes are disengaged.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Test Preparation

  1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Engage the parking brake.

  4. Stop the engine.

  5. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  6. Move the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

  7. Release the pressure by using the pressure release valve.

  9. Slowly remove hydraulic tank filler cap (2) to relieve any pressure in the hydraulic tank.

Reference: For additional information about the release of hydraulic oil pressure, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

Test Procedure

Location of inspection plug.

  1. Thoroughly clean the area around inspection plug (1) of the wheel brake assembly. Remove plug (1) from the inspection port.

Note: The removal of any of the lower inspection plugs on the wheel brake assembly will cause loss of oil in the axle housing.

  2. Install wear indicator

  3. Push wear indicator pin against the reaction plate.

    Illustration 6g06273777

  4. Wear indicator (1) friction disc lining within serviceable limits.

  5. Wear indicator (2) pins flush with nut face. Friction discs to be replaced.

Note: The machine must be shut down and all power off before lining wear can be checked.

The brake must be applied to make the wear indicator check. This means that all hydraulic pressure to the brake must be off as the brakes are applied with spring pressure.

  6. When the wear indicator pin is flush with indicator nut face, the friction and lining disc (A) must be replaced.

  7. Remove the wear indicator and replace with inspection plug.
