New Engines Rated @ 160 kW (210 hp) @ 2600 rpm Must Be Rerated When Used To Replace 2800 rpm Engines{0374}

Usage:

3208 Truck Engines (Except Ford Of Australia)

The 160 kW (210 hp), 3208 DINA Truck Engine, was formerly rated at 2800 rpm. In 1986, the rated speed was reduced to 2600 rpm and a number of internal parts were changed. For new trucks, the change in rated speed from 2800 to 2600 rpm required that axle ratios and/or transmission specifications be changed to maintain the desired road speed.

If a new 160 kW (210 hp) engine rated at 2600 rpm is used to replace an engine rated at 2800 rpm in an earlier truck, the engine must be changed to an EPA approved 2800 rpm setting. If the rated speed is not changed, there may be complaints of low road speed, low power, or shift points that are not correct. In trucks that are equipped with automatic transmissions, the change in rated engine speed can also result in incorrect shifting and symptoms of low power and/or poor performance.

The rating change includes:

... Replacing the existing governor spring.

... Changing the fuel setting and rpm.

... Installing a 4W5140 Engine Information Plate with the new information stamped on it.

The EPA approved 0T6450 Performance Specification is used to reset new or rebuilt 160 kW (210 hp), DINA 2600 rpm engines to a 2800 rpm rating when repowering trucks that were equipped with 1985 and earlier 2800 rpm engines. One of the changes required is replacing the 4N9226 Governor Spring with a 9L6508 Governor Spring. Compare the 0T6450 Performance Specification (for 2800 rpm) with the 0T6295 Performance Specification (for 2600 rpm) to determine other necessary changes.

The turbocharged arrangements of 3208 Engines that have a rating of 160 kW (210 hp) at 2600 rpm are now approved for field resetting to 160 kW (210 hp) at 2800 rpm when upgrading a truck that was previously equipped with a naturally aspirated engine rated at 2800 rpm.

Use the EPA approved 0T6980 Performance Specification to reset certain new or rebuilt turbocharged 160 kW (210 hp) 2600 rpm engines to a 2800 rpm rating. This resetting information applies only to new or remanufactured (engine arrangement OR1151) 1985 and 1986 engines that were originally set at 160 kW (210 hp) at 2600 rpm and which have either Performance Specification 0T3269 or 0T6000.

NOTE: The turbocharged, 160 kW (210 hp) 3208 Engine is sold for use primarily in California but is certified for use in all 50 states. The California Certification is achieved with a different compression ratio (pistons), static fuel timing and turbocharger than used on other "49 state" 3208 Engine ratings. Other turbocharged 3208 Engines are not approved for resetting from 2600 to 2800 rpm.

Unlike the former "50 state", naturally aspirated engines which had EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) systems, the turbocharged 3208 Engines with "50 state" certification do not have EGR or any other special emission control systems.
