C32 Tier 4 Final Marine Commercial Engines Caterpillar

Crankcase Pressure Is High

Usage:

C32 MX4
This engine is equipped with a Closed Crankcase Ventilation System (CCV) that is used for capturing fumes. The pressure sensor monitors the level of crankcase pressure. Fumes from the rear crankcase travel through the camshaft and exit the engine through the crankcase breather at the front of the engine. The fumes from the crankcase breather are collected in the CCV. The engine oil is separated from the fumes from the crankcase in the filter. The engine oil collects in the filter and drains back to the crankcase through a drain line in the bottom of the filter. The fumes from the crankcase are directed back into the compressor inlet to be consumed by the engine. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the replacement of the filter.

Use this procedure to troubleshoot a high crankcase pressure. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  CDL Code and Description  System Response
101-0
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - most severe (3)
E101 (3)
High Crankcase Pressure Warning
The engine crankcase pressure is higher than a threshold.
101-15
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - least severe (1)
E101 (1)
High Crankcase Pressure Warning
The engine crankcase pressure is higher than a threshold.
101-16
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - moderate severity (2)
E101 (2)
High Crankcase Pressure Warning
The engine crankcase pressure is higher than a threshold.

Probable Causes

  • Engine oil

  • Plugged CCV system

  • Clogged CCV filter

  • Sensor

  • Engine components

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check the Engine Oil Level

Oil Level

Result: The engine oil level is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: The engine oil level is high.

Repair: Troubleshoot and repair the cause of the incorrect oil level.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check for Plugged CCV System or Clogged Filters

A plugged CCV system or clogged filter will cause excessive crankcase pressure.

Plugged Crankcase Breather

Result: The crankcase breathers are NOT OK.

Repair: Replace the fumes disposal filter according to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Crankcase Breather - Clean".

Result: The crankcase breathers are OK.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check for a Faulty Pressure Sensor

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

C. Remove the oil filler cap.

D. Monitor the crankcase pressure and the atmospheric pressure in Cat ET.

Crankcase Pressure Sensor

Result: The crankcase pressure is within 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The crankcase pressure is not within 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.

Repair: Replace the crankcase pressure sensor.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Internal Engine Problem

Damaged pistons or rings can cause too much pressure in the crankcase. This condition will cause the engine to run rough. There will be more than the normal quantity of fumes (blowby) entering the crankcase breathers. The crankcase breathers can then more quickly become restricted, causing oil leakage at gaskets and seals that would not normally have leakage. Blowby can also be caused by worn valve guides or by a failed turbocharger seal.

A. To determine whether the piston rings leak, measure the crankcase blowby.

B. Perform the Compression Test using Cat ET. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Compression - Test" for additional information.

Damaged or Worn Engine Parts

Result: There are worn or damaged engine parts.

Repair: Repair or replace the worn or damaged parts.

Result: At least one cylinder has been identified as having low compression.

Repair: Identify the cause of the low compression. Possible causes of low compression include the following:

- Faulty piston
- Faulty piston rings
- Worn cylinder bores
- Worn valves
- Faulty cylinder head gasket
- Damaged cylinder head

Perform the necessary repairs.

Result: The compression for each cylinder is OK.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
