Calibration With Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET)

To perform a calibration with Cat® ET:

  1. Connect Cat ET.

  2. Press "Service" on the tool bar.

  3. Select "Calibrations" in the drop-down menu.

  4. Select "Performance Monitoring System Calibrations" in the calibration menu.

  5. Press the START button at the bottom left of the screen.

  6. Verify all the check boxes are selected.

  7. Press the Begin button.

Empty Bucket Calibration

The first calibration is the empty bucket calibration. The following setup calibration conditions will be shown in the Cat ET menu:

  • Set ride control to the AUTO or OFF position (if equipped).

  • Adjust the lift kickout setting so that weighing is complete prior to the start of the kickout.

  • Exercise implements to warm hydraulic oil above 40° C (104° F).

  • Perform lifts with the bucket back in the FULL RACKBACK position and the lift lever in the DETENT position.

  • Verify that the bucket is empty.

  1. Press the NEXT button on the bottom left of the screen.

Note: Each condition must be satisfied to continue the calibration and will be checked off when met.

If the hydraulic oil temperature is below 40° C (104° F), the operator will be prompted to exercise the implement to warmup the oil.

Once the hydraulic oil is above 40° C (104° F), the operator will be prompted to:

  2. Place the bucket on the ground.

Note: The calibration will not proceed until the system determines that the bucket is in the lowest position. If this parameter is not checked off, the bucket requires lowering or the position sensor requires recalibration.

Once these conditions are met, the operator will be instructed to:

  3. Set the engine speed to high idle.

Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. All steps completed after this unmet condition will need to be completed again.

The operator will be instructed to:

  4. Release the levers.

The operator will be warned that the next set of lifts will be performed at slow lift velocity.

  5. Press the NEXT button.

The operator will be instructed to:

  6. Lift and lower the empty bucket at least two times.

If the second full lift does not match the first full lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the empty bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the operator is instructed to release the lever.

Note: The lift must be representative of a typical empty bucket lift. Two consecutive lifts must match sufficiently for the lift to be representative of a typical empty bucket lift. If consecutive lifts do not match, verify the following:

    • Lift arm motion is smooth and of a consistent speed through the lift.

    • Linkage is properly lubricated.

    • Hydraulic system is working properly.

Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. The slow velocity calibration has been saved and will not need to be performed again.

  7. Release the lever.

The operator will be warned that the next set of lifts will be performed at fast lift velocity.

  8. Press the NEXT button.

  9. Lift and lower the empty bucket at least two times.

If the second empty lift does not match the first empty lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the empty bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the Empty Bucket Weight Calibration Success Screen is displayed.

When the calibration is successful, an Empty Bucket Weight Calibration Success Screen will be displayed.

  10. Press the Continue button.

Full Bucket Calibration

Full Bucket Cat ET Calibration screen

The next calibration is the full bucket calibration.

  • Verify that the bucket contains the calibration weight.

  1. Load the calibration weight into the bucket.

Note: If a bucket of material is used, lightly shake the bucket so the material will settle. Lift the bucket to remove loose material.

  2. Press the NEXT button on the bottom left of the screen.

Each condition must be satisfied to continue the calibration. When met, each condition will be checked off.

If the hydraulic oil temperature is below 40° C (104° F), the operator will be prompted to exercise the implement to warmup the oil. Once the hydraulic oil is above 40° C (104° F), the operator will be prompted to:

  3. Fully rack-back the bucket.

  4. Place the bucket on the ground.

Note: The calibration will not proceed until the system determines that the bucket is in the lowest position. If this parameter is not checked off, the bucket requires lowering or the position sensor requires recalibration.

Once these conditions are met, the operator will be instructed to:

  5. Set the engine speed to high idle.

Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. All steps previously completed after this unmet condition will need to be completed again.

The operator will be instructed to:

  6. Release the levers.

The operator will be warned that the next set of lifts will be performed at slow lift velocity.

  7. Press the NEXT button.

The operator will be instructed to:

  8. Lift and lower the full bucket at least two times.

If the second full lift does not match the first full lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the full bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the operator is instructed to release the lever.

Note: The lift must be representative of a typical full bucket lift. Two consecutive lifts must match sufficiently for the lift to be representative of a typical full bucket lift. If consecutive lifts do not match, verify the following:

    • Lift arm motion is smooth and of a consistent speed through the lift

    • Linkage is properly lubricated

    • Hydraulic system is working properly

Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. The slow velocity calibration has been saved and will not need to be performed again.

  9. Release the lever.

The operator will be warned that the next set of lifts will be performed at fast lift velocity.

  10. Press the NEXT button.

  11. Lift and lower the full bucket at least two times.

If the second full lift does not match the first full lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the full bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the full bucket weight calibration success screen is displayed.

When the calibration is successful, a full bucket weigh calibration success screen will be displayed.

  12. Press Finish to complete the calibration.

  13. Return to the ECM configuration screen.

  14. Select the "Payload Control System Calibration Weight" parameter in the Implement ECM configuration.

  15. Enter the value of the calibration weight used during the calibration.

  16. Press the OK button.
