A new publication is available to aid track press operators and field repairmen in the inspection and installation of split master links. This publication, "Reusability Guidelines and Installation Procedures for Split Master Links", Form SEBF8553, is for insertion in the Methods and Procedures section of the Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide.
Master links and master bolts are the most sensitive components of the track link assembly. How well these components handle the load that is on them during machine operation depends on the condition of the contact surfaces between:
...the heads of the master bolts and the master shoes,
...the master shoes and the master links,
...and link halves.
The condition of the threads in the link halves and on the master bolts is also very important. If the contact surfaces are damaged, or if the bolts are not tightened to correct specifications, the ability of the master joint to carry the load can decrease to a point where track separation can occur. The Reusability Guideline will provide guidance to make the correct reuse decisions.
