SERVICE MAGAZINE, MARCH 2, 1987, PAGE 10, "New Fan Drives Used" on the 3500 Family of Engines. Illustrations 1 and 2 appeared in incorrect order. Illustration 1 should show the earlier style fan drive with the remote mounted grease fitting. Illustration 2 should show the newer style grease fitting mounted directly on the fan drive bracket. Additionally Steps 4 and 5 of the fan belt adjustment procedure are not necessary with the newer fan drive.
--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
Description of Change: New fan drives are used on the 3500 Family of Engines. The new fan drives use a hydraulic cylinder to adjust the belt tension.
Adaptable To: The new fan drives are in effect. There are two versions of these fan drives. The earlier version shown in Illustration 1, uses a remote mounted grease fitting. The later version, shown in Illustration 2, uses a grease fitting mounted in the fan drive bracket.
Illustration 1. Earlier version, 8N6559 Fan Drive Group shown.
Illustration 2. Later version, 7W3952 Fan Drive Group shown.
The procedure to adjust the fan belts is the same for both versions.
1. Loosen the fan drive bracket mounting bolts.
2. Pump grease into the grease fitting until the belts have the correct tension.
3. Tighten the drive bracket mounting bolts.
4. Release the pressure in the cylinder by loosening the grease fitting slowly.
5. After pressure is released, retighten the fitting.
