C7 and C9 On-Highway Engines Caterpillar

Crankcase Pressure Is High

Usage:

C7 C7S
This procedure covers the following diagnostic trouble codes:

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes for High Crankcase Pressure
J1939 Code     Description     Comments
101-15     Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - Least Severe (1)     The Engine Control Module (ECM) activates this code when the crankcase pressure has exceeded the limit for a programmed period. The amber warning lamp is illuminated. The code is logged.
101-16     Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - Moderate Severity (2)     The ECM activates this code when the crankcase pressure has exceeded the limit for a programmed period. The amber warning lamp is illuminated. The code is logged. Engine power is derated by 100 percent.

Illustration 2g01428742

Typical C9 engine

(1) Crankcase pressure sensor

(2) Breather

The engine is equipped with a closed crankcase ventilation system. Refer to Illustration 1. Pressure sensor (1) monitors the level of crankcase pressure. Breather (2) routes blowby from the valve cover base to the outlet of the turbocharger turbine. The breather contains a filter element. The filter element filters the blowby.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. High crankcase pressure can occur if there are obstructions in the crankcase ventilation system. The maintenance section of the engines Operation and Maintenance Manual contains procedures for cleaning two of the components in the crankcase ventilation system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual as you perform the following procedures:

    • "Engine Crankcase Breather - Clean"

    • "Crankcase Fumes Fitting - Inspect/Clean"

  1. Clear the diagnostic code.
