Usage:
All 3500 Series Engines
Description of Change: New tooling is available to install the camshafts in the above engines. When installing a camshaft into the camshaft bearings in the cylinder block, it is necessary to provide a pilot/ guide for the camshaft to prevent damage to the bearings. Because of changes in the camshafts of the above engines, the former installation tooling has been canceled. New installation tools have been released (see Illustration 1) that pilot the camshaft from both ends until the camshaft is in place. Also, the tooling has been designed so that the camshaft can be installed from either end of the engine.

Adaptable To: The new installation tooling, shown in the chart, is a direct replacement for the former 6V4019 Pilot Group, which is canceled. The new tooling can be used on all earlier engines.
Use the following procedure to install a camshaft with the new tooling.
Procedure To Install Camshafts In 3500 Series Engines
1. Use three S1594 Bolts, finger tight, to install the 8T3167 Guide Assembly on the flywheel housing or front cover as shown in Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. Install guide assembly on engine.
2. Install the 8T3168 Pilot Assemblies and the 8T3169 Handle Assembly on the camshaft (see Illustration 3). Two-piece camshafts should be separated for installation.
Illustration 3. Pilot and handle assemblies installed on camshaft.
3. Put engine oil on all bearings and camshaft journals. Install the pilot and camshaft through the guide assembly until the pilot is located in the first bearing. Tighten the bolts on the guide assembly while turning the camshaft.
4a. On 3508 Engines, complete the installation of the camshaft while rotating the camshaft. Remove the tooling and complete the engine assembly.
4b. On 3512 and 3516 Engines, one end of the separated camshaft is rotated and installed as far as the camshaft joint. Attach the other end of the camshaft and complete the installation while rotating the camshaft. Remove the tooling and complete the assembly of the engine.
