Adjustment Procedure
In order to adjust the counterbalance valve, the blade and all of the components for the blade must be installed on the machine. An accurate reading cannot be determined without the weight of the blade and the masts.
If possible, perform this procedure on a hard level surface.

- Remove the rear bottom guard from the machine.

(1) Counterbalance Valve |
Note: The counterbalance valve is located on the right hand frame rail. The counterbalance valve is accessible from the bottom of the machine.
- Loosen the locknut (2) on the adjustment screw (3) for the counterbalance valve (1) . Turn adjustment screw (3) counterclockwise until the adjustment screw (3) is at the end of travel.

- Turn the adjustment screw (3) clockwise, about 2 turns. Tighten the locknut (2) .
- Start the machine and raise the blade off the ground. Place wood blocks under the blade.
Note: Wood blocks are used to prevent damage to the blade or the floor.
Note: Ensure that the hydraulic oil is at the operating temperature.
- Raise the blade to the full height position in order to charge the accumulator.
- Lower the blade and position the blade about 152 mm (6 inch) above the wood blocks.
- Shut off the machine. Turn the key for the machine to the ON position.
- Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) in order to activate the counterbalance valve override without the AccuGrade system in the auto mode.
- Connect up to the machine with ET2004B and a communication adapter.
- Select "Grade/Slope" ECM.

- Press "OK".
- Go to "Service".
- Select "Configuration".
- Select "Configuration Group 1" under the "Grade/Slope Control".
- Verify that the "Product Sales Model" is correct for the machine. If the product sales model is correct, then proceed to Step 8.m otherwise proceed to Step 8.h.
- Highlight the "Product Sales Model" and press "Change". A screen similar to 5 will appear.

- Press the "OK" key. A screen similar to 6 will appear.

- In the "New Value" field, select the appropriate machine model.

- Press the "OK" key.
- Press "Yes" in order to finish the configuration.
Note: It may be necessary to cycle power on the ECM for the changes to take effect.

- Go to the "Override Parameters" by selecting "Diagnostic" then "Diagnostic Test" and then "Override Parameters".
The Override screen, similar to Illustration 9 appears.

- Select "Counterbalance Valve Bypass Override Solenoid".

- Press "Change".
- In the "New Value" item select "On".

- Press the "OK" key.
- Press "Yes" on the confirmation message.
Note: If the counterbalance override is ON, then the screen should appear look like Illustration 13.

- Place the blade control lever in the Float position. If the blade does not drop, skip Step 11 through Step 16. If the blade drops proceed to the next step.
Note: Make sure that you disengage the Float function before you deactivate the counterbalance valve. The blade will rapidly lower if the counterbalance valve is deactivated before the Float function.
Crushing hazard exists between dozer blade and front of machine when engine is running and blade is being operated. Stay clear of this area while engine is running and blade is being operated. Can cause serious injury or death. |
- Deactivate the counterbalance valve override. Refer to Illustration 14.
- Select "Disable All Overrides".
The screen should look like Illustration 15.
- Select "Disable All Overrides".

- Lower the blade on the wood blocks.
- Stop the machine. Loosen the locknut (2) on the adjustment screw (3) for the counterbalance valve (1) . Turn adjustment screw (3) clockwise about 1/4 turn. Tighten the locknut (2) .
- Start the machine and raise the blade to the full height position in order to charge the accumulator.
- Lower the blade and position the blade about 152 mm (6 inch) above the wood blocks.
- Shut off the machine. Turn the key for the machine to the ON position.
- Repeat Step 8 through Step 9.
If the blade continues to drop, repeat Step 11 through Step 12. If the blade does not drop proceed to the next step.
- Deactivate the counterbalance valve override. Refer to Illustration 16.
- Select "Disable All Overrides".
The screen should look like Illustration 17.
- Select "Disable All Overrides".

Note: Make sure that you disengage the Float function before you deactivate the counterbalance valve. The blade will rapidly lower if the counterbalance valve is deactivated before the Float function.
- Lower the blade on the wood blocks and stop the machine. Loosen the locknut (2) on the adjustment screw (3) for the counterbalance valve (1) . Turn the adjustment screw (3) counterclockwise about 1/8 of a turn. Tighten the locknut (2) .
Note: Start with the initial adjustment of about 1/8 of a turn. Complete Step 18 through Step 23. Then use the adjustment of 1/16 of a turn and complete Step 18 through Step 23.
Note: There should be a screw adjustment range of about 1/16 of a turn when the blade lowers and when the blade does not lower.

- Start the machine and raise the blade to the full height position in order to charge the accumulator.
- Lower the blade and position the blade about 305 mm (12 inch) above the wood blocks.
Note: Ensure that the hydraulic oil is at the operating temperature.
- Shut off the machine. Turn the key for the machine to the ON position.
- Use Electronic Technician (ET) in order to activate the counterbalance valve override without the AccuGrade system in the auto mode.
- Connect up to the machine with ET2004B and a communication adapter.
- Select the "Grade/Slope" ECM.
- Press "OK".
- Go to the "Override Parameters" by selecting "Diagnostic" then "Diagnostic Test" and then "Override Parameters".
The Override screen similar to Illustration 20 appears.

- Once the proper range is achieved, loosen the locknut (2) on the adjustment screw (3) for the counterbalance valve (1) . Turn the adjustment screw (3) for the counterbalance valve (1) clockwise about 1/8 turn. Tighten the locknut (2) .

- Install the rear bottom guard from the machine.
