Installation and Removal of the V-PAT Bulldozer{6050}

Introduction

This special instruction provides the procedure for installing and removing the V-PAT bulldozer for the D5N and the D6N Track-Type Tractor.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you fully understand the information.

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

NOTICE

Do not allow any dirt or foreign material to get into the hydraulic system during assembly, connection of lines, when components are filled with fluid, or during any maintenance operation.


Note: Clean all pins and bores in order to remove any dirt or corrosion before assembly.

Note: Before, you begin this procedure attach a Do Not Operate Tag to the start switch of the machine.

Bulldozer V-PAT Installation

  1. Loosen four bolts (F) on block assembly (H). The block assembly is located on the inside of the front C-frame (J). Remove two spacers (G) .

  1. Reposition spacers (G) in front of the pitch link assembly (H) .

  1. Tighten four bolts (F) hand tight.

  1. Remove pin retainer (K) and pin (L) from pitch link assembly (H) .

  1. Remove the pitch link assembly (M) from the block assembly (H) and C-frame (J) .

    Note: There is one spacer above the bearing and one spacer below the bearing in the pitch link assembly. The spacers are not shown. Save the spacers for assembly.

  1. Remove the pin retainer (N) and pin (P) from the center bracket on the back of the blade arrangement.

  1. Install the link assembly (M) to the back of the blade. Install one spacer above the bearing and one spacer below the bearing in the link assembly. Use pin (P), retainer (N), and two bolts that were removed in Step 6.

  1. Raise C-frame (J). Place 203.2 mm (8 inch) blocking (R) under the center of the C-frame. Lower C-frame (J) onto the blocking.

  1. Attach a lifting device to the blade assembly.

  1. Position the blade in front of C-frame (J) with link assembly (M) through the opening in C-frame (J).

  1. Center the bearing in the pitch link assembly (M) over the hole in the block assembly.

  1. Install spacers on the top of the bearing and the bottom of the bearing in the link assembly. Use the spacers that were removed in Step 5.

  1. Install pin (L), retainer (K), and bolts that were removed in Step 4 in order to secure the link in the block assembly (H) .

  1. Adjust the position of the blade so that the spherical bearing in the upper center bracket on the back of the blade is centered over sleeve (S) in the lower bore of C-frame (J).

  1. Lower the hoist so that the spherical bearing rests on top of sleeve (S).

    Note: Do not remove the hoisting equipment from the blade assembly.

  1. Lower pin (7) through the top three bores of C-frame (J) and through the spherical bearing in the blade assembly.

  1. Place pin (5) through the top two bores of C-frame (J) into the top of pin (7) .

  1. Place all shims (1) on top of pin (5) and place cap (4) on top of shims (1). Refer to Illustration 13.

  1. Use bolts (A), washers (2), and spacers (B) to press pin (7) into the lower sleeve. Turn bolts in equal amounts in order to press the pin into position.

    Note: During the process of pressing pin (7) into place, spacers (B) or additional washers (2) must be added to the bolts when thread depth is utilized.

  1. Remove bolts (3), cap (4), and shims (1) .

  1. Install lifting eye (C) in top of pin (5). Remove pin (5) from C-frame (J).

    Note: The lifting equipment may be removed from the blade assembly at this point. The blade assembly will rest with only one dozer end bit on the floor. The blade assembly can pivot about pin (7) .

  1. Assemble spacer (6) into C-frame (J).

    Note: Route tilt cylinder hoses between C-frame (J) and spacer (6). Refer to Illustration 17 for the position.

  1. Remove the tilt cylinder pin and two spacers from the upper right corner of the blade assembly.

  1. Position the head end of tilt cylinder (8) into C-frame (J). Make sure that the spherical bearing is positioned on top of spacer (6).

  1. Install pin (5), shims (1), and cap (4) on top of C-frame (J). Use bolts (A), washers (2), spacers (B), and bolts (3) to seat pin (5) into C-frame (J).

    Note: Pin (5), bolts (A), and spacers (B) are not shown in the illustration.

  1. Check the gap between the top of C-frame (J) and cap (4). Adjust the number of shims (1) until only one shim is totally protruding above the top face of C-frame (J).

    Note: Make sure that there is a gap between cap (4) and the top of C-frame (J) after installing pin (5). Cap (4) may contact the top of C-frame (J) in the area under each bolt head.

  1. Remove plugs from tilt cylinder (8). Use an appropriate container to catch any oil that may drain from the cylinder.

  1. Use connectors (42, 43, and 44) and seals (10) to install hydraulic hoses on tilt cylinder (8) .

    Note: Before tightening the hydraulic hose connections, put a twist in the hydraulic hoses so that the hoses do not contact the cylinder rods. Refer to Illustration 23.

  1. Install the rod end of cylinder (8) to the blade assembly. Install the following items: pin, retainer, bolts and spacers Refer to Step 23 for removed components.

    Note: Install one spacer above the cylinder and one spacer below the cylinder (8) .

  1. Install guard assembly (39) to tilt cylinder (8). Use bolts (12) and washers (14) .

  1. Install one angle cylinder to the blade assembly. Use the pin, the retainer, the bolt, the washer, and the spacers that are provided with the blade assembly.

    Note: Install one spacer above the bulldozer angle cylinder and one spacer below the bulldozer angle cylinder.

  1. Repeat Step 31 in order to install the angle cylinder on the other side of the blade assembly.

  1. Install clips (24 and 25) to the tilt cylinder (8) and the tilt cylinder hoses. Use bolts (12 and 40), washers (14), and grommet (26) .

  1. Loosen four bolts (F) on the back of block assembly (H).

    ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Dozer Blade Tip" for information on adjusting the blade and the procedure.

  1. Move spacers (G) to the back side of the block assembly (H). Tighten four bolts (F) to 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 75 lb ft).

  1. Remove bolts (12), washers (13), and guard assembly (8) from tilt cylinder (8).

  1. Disconnect the hydraulic hose from cylinder (8). Use a suitable container to catch any oil that may drain from the holes of the cylinder. Cap hose and plug cylinder ports in order to prevent foreign material from entering the hydraulic system.

  1. Remove the bolts, the washers, the retainer, and the pin in order to free the rod end of cylinder (8).

    Note: There is one spacer above the rod end and one spacer below the rod end. Save the spacers for reassembling of the blade assembly.

  1. Remove bolts (3), cap (4) and shims (1) .

  1. Assemble eyebolt (C) to pin (5). Use a hoist and eyebolt (C) to remove pin (5) .

  1. Attach a lifting device to the blade assembly. Remove any slack from the lifting equipment.

  1. Assemble stud puller (W) into the threads of pin (7).

  1. Assemble cylinder (V), washer (U), and fast runner nut assembly (T) to stud puller (W).

  1. Hand tighten fast runner nut assembly (T).

  1. Connect hose from hydraulic pump group (Y) (not shown) to cylinder (V) .

  1. Insert wedges (X) between the upper center bracket and the C-frame.

  1. Use the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic cylinder to raise pin (7).

    Note: Raise the cylinder to the end of the stroke and lower the cylinder rod. Hand tighten the nut and raise the cylinder again. Continue this procedure until the pin can be removed by hand.

  1. Remove one blade angle cylinder from the blade assembly.

    Note: There is one spacer above the rod end and one spacer below the rod end. Save the spacers for reassembling of the blade assembly.

  1. Repeat Step 20 on the other side of the blade assembly.

Procedure to Fold the Blade

  1. Unlock the removable side of the blade.

    1. Slightly raise the blade in order to clear the blade from the ground.

    1. Remove the cotter pin and pins (1) .

    1. Pull out bar (2) after having removed both of the retention cotter pins.

  1. Fold the removable side of the blade. Place the end of bar (2) in the hole at the top left corner of the blade and push in order to fold the blade.

  1. Place bar (2) and pins (1) as shown in Illustration 47 in order to lock the removable side of the blade.

    Note: Proceed to Steps 4 through 8 for LGP machines only.

  1. Remove right-hand pins (3) from each link. Refer to Illustration 48 for the correct pins to remove.

    Note: The angling cylinders must be actuated slowly and without jerks to avoid hitting the blade.

  1. From the cab, block the blade in flat position on the ground and actuate the angling cylinders to the right in order to place the links in the transportation position. Refer to illustrations 49 and 50 for the transportation position for the links.

  1. Insert the left-hand pin as shown in Illustration 49.

  1. Insert the right-hand pin as shown in Illustration 50.

  1. From the cab, slightly raise the blade and make the blade completely swivel to the left.

  1. Remove the right-hand pins from each link.

  1. From the cab, slightly raise the blade and make the blade swivel to the right until the blade is perpendicular to the machine centerline.

  1. Remove pins (1) and bar (2) in order to unlock the removable side of the blade.

  1. Unfold the removable side of the blade. Place the end of bar (2) in the hole at the top left corner of the blade and push in order to unfold the blade.

  1. Lock the removable side of the blade.

    1. Place bar (2) at the rear of the blade and attach with two cotter pins.

    1. Install pins (1) in order to secure the blade in the working position.

  1. From the cab, block the blade in flat position on the ground and actuate the angling cylinders to the left in order to place the links in working position.

  1. Insert the pins in order to lock the links and the blade in working position. Refer to Illustration 56 for the correct location of the links.
