Auxiliary Drive Shaft - Remove

Usage:

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Install the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
  2. Connect the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Frame Lock Link- Separate and Connect".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: For easier assembly, mark all hose assemblies, tube assemblies, wire harnesses and cables for identification purposes.

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting sling around the front section of auxiliary drive shaft (1). Secure the suitable lifting sling to a hoist.

  1. Remove four bolts (2) and the washers that secure the front section of auxiliary drive shaft (1) to the yoke on the front pump drive. Discard four bolts (2). Do not reuse bolts.

  1. Remove four bolts (3) and the washers that secure the front section of auxiliary drive shaft (1) to the yoke. Discard four bolts (3). Do not reuse bolts. Remove the front section of auxiliary drive shaft (1). The weight of the front section of auxiliary drive shaft (1) is 86 kg (190 lb).

  1. Open the two door assemblies behind the cab. Remove bolt (4), the washers, and the nuts that secure hose clamp (5) to hose assembly (6). Remove hose clamp (5) from hose assembly (6). Disconnect hose assemblies (6) and (7) from the steering valve.

  1. Remove hose assembly (6) from the high pressure screen. Remove hose assembly (7) from the high pressure screen.

  1. Disconnect hose assembly (8) from the brake valve and the accumulator manifold for the brake accumulators.

  1. Remove bolt (9) and retainer (10) that secures yoke (11) to the rear section of the auxiliary drive shaft. Remove yoke (11) and the dirt guard from the rear section of the auxiliary drive shaft.

  1. Disconnect grease line (12) from bearing retainer (13). Remove six bolts (14) that secure bearing retainer (13) and the bearing cage to the center bracket assembly on the engine end frame. Remove bearing retainer (13) and the bearing cage from the rear section of the auxiliary drive shaft.

  1. Remove two bolts (15) that secure bearing retainer (13) to the bearing cage. Separate bearing retainer (13) from the bearing cage.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting sling around the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16). Secure the suitable lifting sling to a hoist. Remove 12 bolts (17) and the washers in order to separate the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) from torsional coupler (18). Separate auxiliary drive shaft (16) from torsional coupler (18) .

  1. Slide the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) forward. Secure the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) in the center bracket assembly on the engine end frame.

  1. Disconnect two hose assemblies (19) and (20) from the manifold on top of the rear pump drive.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting sling around torsional coupler (18). Secure the suitable lifting sling to a hoist. Remove torsional coupler (18) from the rear pump drive. The weight of torsional coupler (18) is 66 kg (145 lb).

  1. Disconnect electrical harness (21) at the electrical connection. Remove the bolt and the washer that secures clamp (22) to the transmission. Position clamp (22) and wire harness (23) for the removal of the auxiliary drive shaft.

  1. Remove the bolt and the washer that secures hose clamp (24) to the transmission. Position hose clamp (24) and hose assembly (25) for the removal of the auxiliary drive shaft.

  1. Attach the suitable lifting sling on the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) to a hoist.

  1. Remove the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) from the center bracket assembly on the engine end frame. The weight of the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16) is 84 kg (185 lb).

  1. Remove four bolts (26) that secure spider (27) to the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft (16). Discard four bolts (26). Do not reuse bolts. Remove spider (27) from the rear section of auxiliary drive shaft ( 16) .

  1. Repeat the procedure for each end of the front section of the auxiliary drive shaft.

  1. Remove O-ring seal (28) from yoke (11) .

  1. Remove dirt guard (29) from yoke (11) .

  1. Use a hammer and a punch in order to remove lip seal (30) from bearing retainer (13) .

  1. Remove fitting (31) and the O-ring seal from bearing retainer (13) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (32) from bearing cage (33) .

  1. Place bearing cage (33) on wood blocks, as shown. Use a hammer and a brass punch in order to remove roller bearing (34) from bearing cage (33) .

  1. Use a hammer and a punch in order to remove lip seal (35) from bearing cage (33) .
