Start By:

  1. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    NOTICE

    Do not damage the flange on the crankshaft when the crankshaft oil seal is removed or installed. Damage to the crankshaft can result if the proper tool is not used.


  1. Use Tool (A) to carefully drill three evenly spaced holes in crankshaft rear seal (1) .

  1. Insert Tool (B) into one of the three holes in order to remove crankshaft rear seal (1) .

  1. Remove crankshaft rear seal (1) by carefully alternating the position of Tool (B) from hole to hole. This will allow the crankshaft rear seal to be removed evenly without damage to the rear flange surface of the crankshaft.
