The auxiliary starting receptacle for the tractor is located on the right side front of the machine.

The auxiliary starting receptacle for the scraper is located on the rear of the machine.

Some Caterpillar products may be equipped with auxiliary starting receptacles as a standard part. All other machines can be equipped with a receptacle for parts service. Then, a permanent receptacle is always available for jump starting.

Two cable assemblies are also available in order to jump start the stalled machine from another machine that is also equipped with this receptacle or with an auxiliary power pack. Your Caterpillar Dealer can provide the correct cables for your application.

1. Make the initial determination of the machine's failure to crank.

2. Move the transmission control of the stalled machine into the NEUTRAL position. Engage the parking brake. Lower the attachment to the ground. Move all controls to the HOLD position.

3. Turn the engine start switch on the stalled machine to the OFF position. Turn off all accessories.

4. On the stalled machine, turn the battery disconnect switch (if equipped) to the ON position.

5. Move the machine that is being used as a power source so that the jump start cables can reach the stalled machine. Do not allow the machines to contact each other.

6. Stop the engine on the machine that is being used as a power source. If you are using an auxiliary power source, turn off the charging system.

7. Remove the dust covers on the auxiliary starting receptacles.

8. On the stalled machine, connect the appropriate jump start cable to the auxiliary starting receptacle.

9. Connect the other end of the jump start cable to the auxiliary starting receptacle that is on the power source.

10. Start the engine on the machine that is being used as a power source. If you are using an auxiliary power source, energize the charging system on the auxiliary power source.

11. Wait for a minimum of two minutes while the batteries in the stalled machine partially charge.

12. Attempt to start the stalled engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting" for the correct starting procedure.

13. Immediately after you start the stalled engine, disconnect the jump start cable from the power source.

14. Disconnect the other end of the jump start cable from the stalled machine.

15. Install the dust covers on the auxiliary starting receptacles.

16. When the engine is running and the charging system is in operation, conclude the failure analysis on the starting charging system of the stalled machine, as required.

17. Severely discharged batteries will not fully recharge from the alternator alone after you jump start the machine. The batteries must be charged to the proper voltage with a battery charger. Many batteries that are considered to be unusable can still be recharged.
