Start By:

  1. Remove the piston motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan and Piston Motor (Hydraulic Fan) - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Apply tape to shaft (1) in order to protect the lip seal.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (2) .

  1. Use two suitable screwdrivers to remove front cover (3) , the O-ring seals, and the shims.

  1. Remove lip seal (4) from front cover (3) .

  1. Mark the position of head (6) in relation to the housing. Remove bolts (5) and head (6) .

  1. Note the position of locating pin (7) on flushing valve plate (8) .

  1. Remove flushing valve plate (8) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (9) .

  1. Compress the retainer and spring (10) in order to start dowel pin (11) out of the bore. Repeat this procedure for the other side.

  1. Remove dowel pins (11) , as shown. Repeat this procedure for the other side.

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  1. Use suitable pliers and hold center pin (12) , as shown. Apply pressure to the right side. The pressure should be applied away from the bushing, the spring, and the retainer. Compress the retainer and the spring with the seal pick. This will allow bushing (13) , the spring, and retainer (10) to be removed.

  1. Remove center pin (12) to the right side. Remove bushings (13) . Remove springs and retainers (10) . Remove springs (11) .

    Note: Mark piston assembly (16) in relation to barrel (15) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) to remove rotating group (14) . Remove Tooling (B) from rotating group (14) .

  1. Pull barrel (15) from the drive shaft and piston assembly (16) .

  1. Remove belleville washers (17) and spacer (18) from the center pin bore of barrel (15) .

  1. Use a suitable section of a pipe or suitable blocking, and put the drive shaft and piston assembly in position, as shown.

  1. Position pistons (19) in a perpendicular direction to retaining plate (20) . Remove pistons (19) by pulling pistons (19) in a straight line. Remove pistons (19) . The center piston cannot be removed at this time.

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Piston rings can break during removal from the piston.

    Make sure to wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury from flying parts.

  1. Check pistons (19) at Area (X) for scratches and pitting. Replace pistons (19) , if necessary.

  1. Use a suitable screwdriver, and remove piston rings (21) from pistons (19) .

  1. Remove screws (22) that hold the retainer plate to the drive shaft assembly. Screws (22) were installed with thread lock compound. The removal of screws (22) may be difficult. Provide impact to screws (22) first. This is done in order to break the seal. Remove screws (22) by using additional leverage on a suitable screwdriver, as shown.

  1. Remove center pin (23) , the retainer plate, and washer (24) that holds the center pin in place.

  1. Check center pin (23) for scratches or pitting at Areas (Y) . Replace center pin (23) , if necessary.

  1. Use Tooling (C) and remove spanner nut (25) from shaft (26) .

  1. Use a suitable press to remove bearing cup (27) , bearing ring (28) , bearing cone (31) , and bearing cup (30) from shaft (26) .

  1. Remove bearing cone (29) .
