Engine & Transmission

Usage:

Remove & Install Engine & Transmission

Start By:

a. remove cab

b. remove radiator

c. remove oil cooler

1. Drain transmission. Remove bolts and disconnect shaft (1) to rear axle.

2. Remove bolts and disconnect shaft (2) to front yoke.

3. Remove wiring harness tie (3). Remove bolts (5) and shield (4).

4. Disconnect two wiring harnesses (6). Remove bolts and supports (7).

NOTE: It is necessary to evacuate the freon in the air conditioning system before any lines are removed. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual FORM NO. SENR3334-01.

Effective July 1,1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01 and NEDG5065-01 forth proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.

Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping Freon-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) can cause freezing of human flesh.

Do Not smoke while working on air conditioning. Inhaling Freon-12 through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can cause violent illness. Also heat must never be applied to a charged system. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual Form No. SENR3334-01, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.

5. Disconnect hose assembly (10) to priming pump. Disconnect hose assembly (9) to governor. Disconnect hose assembly (8) to compressor.

6. Disconnect two wiring connectors (12). Disconnect two hose assemblies (11).

7. Disconnect hose assembly (13). Remove bolts and hose clamp (14) and disconnect hose assembly (15).

8. Disconnect hose assembly (17) and reposition lines (16).

9. Disconnect electrical connectors (18).

10. Disconnect ground cable (19) and hose assemblies (20).

11. Remove bolts and tube (21).

12. Support unit with tooling (A) and (B).

13. Remove rear mounting bolts (22).

14. Remove bolts (23) from mounting bracket and remove engine and transmission. Weight of the engine and transmission is 1180 kg (2600 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the engine and transmission.

15. Support unit with tooling (B) and position for installation.

16. Install bolts (23) in mounting bracket.

17. Install rear mounting bolts (22).

18. Install bolts and tube (21).

19. Connect ground cable (19) and connect hose assemblies (20).

20. Connect electrical connectors (18).

21. Connect hose assembly (17) and position lines (16) back to proper location.

22. Connect hose assembly (15) and install bolt and hose clamp (14). Connect hose assembly (15).

23. Connect two hose assemblies (11) and connect two wiring connectors (12).

24. Connect hose assembly (8) to compressor. Connect hose assembly (9) to governor. Connect hose assembly (10) to priming pump.

25. Install bolts in supports (7) and connect two wiring harness (6).

26. Install shield (4) and install bolts (5). Replace wiring harness tie (3).

27. Connect shaft (2) to front yoke and install bolts.

28. Connect shaft (1) to rear axle and install bolts.

End By:

a. install oil cooler

b. install radiator

c. install cab

Separation & Connection Of Engine From Transmission

Start By:

a. remove engine & transmission

1. Support transmission and engine using tooling (C).

2. Support transmission with tooling (A) as shown.

3. Using tooling (B) and a hoist support for removal.

3. Disconnect two connectors (1). Remove wiring harness (2), remove bolts (3) and separate transmission from engine.

NOTE: Connect engine & transmission in the reverse order.
