Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
- Install the upper halves of the main bearings in the engine block.
- Apply clean engine oil to the bearings.

Illustration 3 g01004076 - Apply clean engine oil on the threads of the bolts and on the faces of the washers that hold the main bearing caps. Install the bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to
40 ± 4 N·m (30 ± 3 lb ft) . Place a mark on the bolt heads and bearing caps. Tighten the bolts 90° from the mark, as shown in Illustration 3. Remove the bearing caps and measure the thickness of Tooling (A). Main bearing clearance must be0.121 ± 0.045 mm (0.0048 ± 0.0018 inch) . Maximum permissible clearance is0.25 mm (0.010 inch) . - Apply clean engine oil in the lower halves of main bearings. Install the caps in the correct locations. Install the bolts and washers. Tighten to
40 ± 4 N·m (30 ± 3 lb ft) . Place marks on bolt heads and caps. Tighten each bolt 90° from the mark, as shown in Illustration 3.Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g01004077 Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g01004079 - Check the crankshaft end clearance with Tooling (B). The end clearance is controlled by thrust bearing (1) on the rear main. End clearance must be
0.122 to 0.579 mm (0.005 to 0.023 inch) .Note: If the accessory drive gear, the idler gear, the camshaft gear, or the crankshaft gear have been removed or replaced, it is necessary to put the accessory drive shaft into correct timing after the engine is assembled.
End By:
