C15 On-highway Engine Caterpillar

Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install

Usage:

C15 BXS

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the variable valve actuators. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Actuator (Variable) - Remove".

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Required Tools
Tool  Part Number  Part Description  Qty
3S-6252  Sealant
9S-3263  Thread Lock Compound

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Before assembly, check the condition of the seal. If the seal is worn or damaged, use a new part for replacement.

  1. Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of bolts (11). Install bolts (11) and the clips for wiring harness (12).

  2. Install the connector seal and harness assembly (9) to the valve cover base. Install bolts (10).

Note: Install the connector seal with the curved part of the seal against the valve cover base.

  3. Install seal (8) in valve mechanism cover base (3). Apply Tooling (A) to the seal joint.

    Tightening sequence

  4. Put valve mechanism cover base (3) in position on the cylinder head and install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 18 ± 3 N·m (13 ± 2 lb ft) in the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 5.

  5. Connect harness assembly (1).

  6. Connect tube assembly (4).

  7. Position the harness assembly in position on electronic unit injector (5). Tighten the cap nuts to a torque of 2.5 ± 0.25 N·m (22 ± 2 lb in).

  8. Connect the harness assembly to variable valve actuator oil pressure sensor (6).

  9. Connect the harness assembly to variable valve actuator oil pressure solenoid (7).

Note: After the variable valve actuators are installed, again tighten bolts (2) for the valve mechanism cover base. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 18 ± 3 N·m (13 ± 2 lb ft) in the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 5.

End By:

  1. Install the variable valve actuator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Actuator (Variable) - Install".
