3512B Marine Auxiliary Engine Caterpillar

Electronic Service Tool Will Not Communicate with ECM

Usage:

3512 4DR
The probable root causes are listed below:

  • Connector or wiring problem

  • Communication adapter and/or cable

  • Battery voltage

  • Service tool connector

  • Personality Module

  • CAT Data Link

  • Electrical power supply to the Electronic Control Module (ECM)

Perform the following checks:

  1. Check for correct installation of the ECM connectors J1/P1, J2/P2 and service tool connector J60/P60. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".

  1. Disconnect the communication adapter from the ECM. Reconnect the communication adapter to the ECM.

    1. Verify that the correct cable from the communication adapter to the ECM is being used. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools".

  1. Verify that battery voltage is present at pin-A and pin-B of the service tool connector. If the communication adapter tool is not receiving power the display will be blank.

  1. Check for correct installation of the ECM Personality Module.

Note: If the Personality Module has not been installed or the Personality Module is a blank, new Personality Module, the engine will not start. If the Personality Module has not been installed or the Personality Module is a blank, new Personality Module, the engine will not communicate with the service tools. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Programming Parameters".

  1. Check power to the ECM. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply".

Note: If the ECM is not receiving 24 VDC the ECM will not communicate.
