4. Remove bushing (2). Remove seals (1) and the O-ring seal from bushing.

5. Remove two races (3) and bearing (5).

6. Remove spool and sleeve (18) as a unit from the housing (19).

NOTE: Spool, sleeve and valve housing are not serviced separately. Check these parts, if worn or damaged, replace with a new valve housing assembly.

7. Remove pin (21) and sleeve (20) from spool (22).

8. Remove the six springs (23) from spool.

9. Remove spring (8) and ball (7) from housing (19).

Assemble Steering Metering Valve

NOTICE

All parts must be clean and free from dirt before assembly. Inspect all parts to see if they have been damaged by dirt or metal particles. Parts having a small amount of damage can be cleaned with 600 grit abrasive paper by hand rubbing only.

1. Install ball (19) and spring (10) in housing (6).

2. Install the six springs (4), three springs into spool (3) then the other springs. The curves of the first three springs must be against the curve of the last three installed. The notch on each end of the springs will be up.

3. Install sleeve (1) over the spool (3) so the groove in bottom of sleeve is engaged with ends of springs (4). Install pin (2).

4. Push spool and sleeve (5) as a unit into valve housing (6) with a little rotation motion.

5. Install two races (17) and bearing (9) in housing.

6. Install O-ring seal and seals (16) on bushing. Install bushing (7) and snap ring (8) in housing.

7. Put the housing in a vise with the lower end up.

8. Install drive (20) and plate (11) on housing with notch in drive (20) over pin (18).

9. Install top gear set (22) with pin (18) in alignment with point between teeth of inner gear (21). There are six correct ways and six incorrect ways to install this.

NOTE: If this is not installed correctly, the valve will not operate, the gear will stop and steering wheel can not be turned any farther.

10. Install spacers (12), spline (13), bottom gear set (23), spacer (14), bottom plate (24) and bolts (15). Tighten bolts to a torque of 20 lb.ft. (2,8 mkg).

end by:
