Hydraulic System Oil and Filter - Change

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Drain the Oil

Before starting this procedure, ensure that both of the engines are stopped. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Model View Illustrations" for the location of the hydraulic system oil tank.

(1) Drain valve

(2) Plug

  1. Remove plug (2) .

  1. Attach a 2-11 1/2 NPTF fitting and a suitable length of hose to the drain valve in order to direct the used hydraulic oil to a suitable container. The container should have a minimum capacity of 380 L (100 US gal).

  1. Open drain valve (1) in order to drain the oil.

  1. After the oil has drained, close the drain valve.

  1. Replace the plug on the drain valve.

  1. Loosen plug (3) in order to relieve any remaining system pressure.

  1. Loosen bolts (2) that retain cover (1). It is not necessary to remove the bolts.

  1. Rotate the cover clockwise.

  1. Remove the cover and remove the O-ring.

  1. Remove the bypass valve assembly and remove the filter element.

  1. Inspect the O-ring and inspect the bypass valve assembly for damage. Replace any damaged component.

  1. Clean the O-ring and clean the bypass valve assembly. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean hydraulic oil.

  1. Install the new filter element in the filter housing.

  1. Install the bypass valve assembly and install the O-ring.

  1. Install the cover. Rotate the cover counterclockwise.

  1. Tighten the bolts that retain the cover.

Fill the Tank

(1) Cap

  1. Remove cap (1) .

  1. Fill the tank with 380 L (100 US gal) of fluid. For information on the proper fluid to use, refer to the hydraulic pump's "OEM Service Manual".

  1. Install the cap.

    (3) High oil level

    (4) Low oil level

  1. Observe the position of the hydraulic oil level in sight gauge (2). At normal operating temperature, the proper hydraulic oil level is in the upper half of the sight gauge. If the hydraulic oil level is low, add the proper hydraulic oil.
