Start By:
- Separate the track assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate" in this manual.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch. |
- Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" in this manual.
- Remove four bolts (2), the washers and cover assembly (3).

- Remove four bolts (1), the washers and cover assembly (4) .
- Remove two bolts (5) that hold the sprocket to the final drive from the locations shown. Use the two bolts and fasten Tool (A) to the sprocket and final drive. Fasten a hoist to Tool (A), and put slight lifting tension on final drive (6) .
Note: Oil will flow from the tube assemblies when the tube assemblies are disconnected. Oil will flow from the hose assemblies when the hose assemblies are disconnected. Position a pan under the tube assemblies and the hose assemblies in order to collect the drain oil.

- Disconnect hose assemblies (7), (8), (9), and (11) from the travel brake valve. Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies. Plugs prevent oil loss. Plugs prevent contaminating the hydraulic system.
Illustration 3 | g00843886 |
- Remove 20 bolts (10) that hold the final drive to the undercarriage frame assembly. Remove two plugs (12) from the threaded holes in the undercarriage frame assembly.
- Install two suitable sized forcing bolts in the threaded holes in the undercarriage frame assembly. Tighten the forcing bolts evenly in order to loosen the final drive from the undercarriage frame. Remove final drive (6). The combined weight of the final drive, sprocket, travel motor and travel brake valve is approximately 299 kg (659 lb).
- Fasten final drive (6) to Tool (B), as shown.
Illustration 4 | g00843898 |
- Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to travel brake valve and travel motor (13), as shown. Remove the two socket head bolts that hold the travel brake valve and the travel motor to the final drive. Carefully remove travel brake valve and travel motor (13) from the final drive. The weight of the unit is approximately 61 kg (134 lb).
- Remove the O-ring seal from the travel motor case assembly.
