NOTICE

For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, and for start-up of an engine that has been serviced, make provision to shut the engine off should an overspeed occur. This may be accomplished by shutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine.

Do not start the deck engine or move any of the controls if there is a "DO NOT OPERATE" warning tag or a similar warning tag attached to the start switch or to the controls.

Ensure that no one will be endangered before the deck engine is started and when the deck engine is started.

  1. Perform all of the procedures that are described in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Before Starting Engine" (Operation Section).

  1. Ensure that the triplex pump's shaft brake is off and that the gear selector is in the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Move the "DECK START/RUN/KILL" switch into the START position. Hold the switch until the deck engine starts.

  1. If the deck engine does not start after a few attempts, shut off the fuel. Crank the deck engine for ten seconds to clear fuel from the cylinders.

  1. When the deck engine starts, check the oil pressure gauge of the deck engine. If the pressure does not rise within a few seconds, stop the deck engine. Locate the problem before restarting the deck engine.

  1. After the deck engine starts, operate the deck engine at low idle rpm for two to three minutes. Allow the jacket water coolant temperature to begin to rise before increasing the rpm of the deck engine. Check the gauges during the warm-up.

  1. Increase the deck engine to 1000 rpm.

  1. Allow the deck engine to warm up until the coolant temperature reaches at least 54 °C (130 °F). You may now operate the deck engine at partial throttle. Wait until the coolant temperature reaches at least 71 °C (160 °F) before operating the deck engine at full throttle.

During the warm up time, all gauges should be checked. A walk-around inspection should be performed. Listen for unusual noises. In areas with subzero temperatures, a longer warm-up time is required.
