Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Remove the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Remove the bolts that fasten the flywheel housing to adapter plate (1) . Remove the flywheel housing.
If it is necessary to remove adapter plate (1) , perform the following procedure.
- Remove the drive coupling. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Coupling - Remove and Install".
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove".
- Remove the bolts that fasten adapter plate (1) to the cylinder block. Hit the adapter plate with a soft hammer in order to remove adapter plate (1) from the cylinder block.

Note: This procedure is for engines which have an adapter plate that is installed on the cylinder block. Flywheel housing (2) has a mounting flange (3) for the marine transmission.
Installation Procedure

- If adapter plate (1) was removed, use the following procedure to install the adapter plate.
- Ensure that the rear face of the cylinder block and both sides of adapter plate (1) are clean and free from damage.
- Install a new gasket on location pins (4) of the cylinder block. Cut the bottom of the gasket in line with the bottom of housing (5) for the rear oil seal.

- Check the alignment of the adapter plate. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Flywheel Housing - Adjust".
- Install the bolts that fasten the adapter plate to the cylinder block and tighten to a torque of 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
- Fill space (6) between the bottom of the housing for the rear oil seal and adapter plate (1) with Loctite 596 .

- Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install".
- Install the drive coupling. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Coupling - Remove and Install".
- Install flywheel housing (2) onto adapter plate (1) .
End By: Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".
