An improved spacer ring for dual tires is now available on certain wheeled excavators. The following procedure will determine the spacer ring that needs to be used.
- Inspect the tires and rings daily.
Note: Any damage that is seen must be eliminated before the machine is used. This is also the case when a tire or a ring is damaged during operation.
- Ensure that the tire pressure is 7.5 bar (109 psi).
- Replace damaged tires with the same model.
Note: All eight tires on the excavator must have the same outer diameter and tread pattern. Large differences in the outer diameter lead to increased stress on the final drive. This leads to additional wear of the drive train and possible premature failure of the drive train components.
- When replacing a damaged tire or when changing to a new brand of tires that are not found in the price sheet, ensure that the gap that is between the tires allows for the use of the ring. The gap should be measured with the dual tires mounted on the machine without the ring. The measurement should be taken at the highest position. This is just below the tread in which the flanks are closest to each other. If the gap is too small, then the tires will compress the ring too much. This could possibly lead to an early failure. If the gap is too large, then the ring will move excessively between the tires. This could cause heat damage to both the ring and the tires.
Note: The rings are designed to move between the tires. This is done in order to relieve stress that is caused by tire movement and differences in the rotational speed of the dual tires.

- The thickness of the ring should be measured on the flank and not on the outer diameter (42mm/25mm and not 60mm/46mm). Refer to Table 1 for the correct spacer ring.
Note: The width of the tires at the flanks is not specified by any standard. As a result, this dimension can be changed by the tire manufacturer at any time. Consequently, it is important to check the gap even if the tires are the same model.
Note: For a larger gap, please contact your local tire dealer for a matching ring.
