Timing Control and Interface Box

Usage:

G3508 2JF
The Timing Control Module (TCM) provides the following three signals to the Magneto Interface Box (MIB) in order to communicate the desired ignition timing:

  • Magneto interface clock signal

  • Magneto reset pulse signal

  • Manual override signal

The MIB returns the interface ignition pulse signal to the TCM. The TCM calculates the actual engine timing. The TCM performs some diagnostics for the ignition from this signal. Refer to illustration 1 and illustration 2 for the following signal descriptions.

Magneto Interface Clock Signal

The magneto interface clock signal is a square wave version of the speed sensor signal. This signal provides a clock for the MIB.

Magneto Reset Pulse Signal

The magneto reset pulse signal indicates the ignition timing to the MIB. The ignition timing is determined by the TCM. The pulse is sent once per two revolutions of the crankshaft.

Manual Override Signal

The manual override signal tells the MIB to control the magneto in the electronic timing mode or in the manual mode. In manual mode, the magneto will operate at the full advanced timing. This is comparable to a fixed timing magneto.

Magneto Interface Ignition Pulses

The magneto interface ignition pulses are derived from the magneto's charge of the odd ordered bank capacitor. This signal has a waveform which indicates the discharge of the odd ordered bank capacitor and the firing of the odd ordered cylinders. The odd ordered cylinders may or may not be the odd numbered bank cylinders. This signal is used by the TCM in order to calculate the ignition timing. This signal is also used by the TCM to determine some of the ignition diagnostics.
