    ------ WARNING! ------

The spring of the recoil spring assembly is compressed under several tons of force.

Do not attempt to compress or release the tension of the spring with the nut on the end of the retaining rod.

Damaged threads on the retaining rod or nut can cause the assembly to come apart with force, resulting in injury or death.

    ----------------------

Note: Prior to assembling the recoil spring assembly, make sure that Tooling (A) is on a level surface.

    Illustration 1g00498786

  1. Check the condition of the threads on recoil spring retaining rod (12) and nut (6) . If the threads are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Check the inside of support assembly (8) . Make sure that the support assembly is clean and free of dirt.

  1. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely. Install spring (9) in support assembly (8) . Install recoil spring retaining rod (12) and support (10) .

    Illustration 3g00498784

Note: The use of a pry bar might be necessary to line up support (10) with support assembly (8) . Place the pry bar between the recoil spring assembly and movable plate (3) of Tooling (A) to line up the support with the support assembly.

    Illustration 4g00494710

  1. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is 175 kg (385 lb). Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in position on two adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A) . Adjust the two adjustable supports in order to align the centerline of the recoil spring assembly with the centerline of Tooling (A) .

    Illustration 6g00498781

Note: The hoist has been removed from the recoil spring assembly in order to provide a better illustration of level gauge (4) .

  1. Put a level gauge (4) on the recoil spring assembly. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the recoil spring assembly is level. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the retaining rod and nut (6) are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2) . The recoil spring assembly is leveled by moving adjustable supports (1) higher or lower. After the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered, install two pins (5) on the back side of reaction plate (2) , as shown.

  1. Operate Tool (B) and guide the end of the recoil spring assembly through the hole in reaction plate (2) . Again, check and make sure that the recoil spring assembly is level and centered in Tooling (A) . Remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly.

    Illustration 8g01044516

  1. Close covers (7) on Tooling (A) . Compress the recoil spring assembly with Tool (B) . Open the covers on Tooling (A) , and measure the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly. Measure the distance from the end of the support assembly to the mark on support (10) , as shown. Dimension "X" is the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly. The assembled length must be 697 ± 2 mm (27.44 ± 0.05 inch). If the assembled length is not correct, close covers (7) on Tooling (A) , and adjust the spring length with Tool (B) . If the assembled length is correct, install washer (11) and nut (6) . Tighten nut (6) with Tool (E) .

  1. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly. Remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A) . Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound on the threads of the two socket head bolts that hold lock strip (13) in place. Install the lock strip and the two socket head bolts that secure the lock strip. Bend the tab on the lock strip over the flats on nut (6) .

End By: Install the front idler and recoil spring assembly as a unit. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idler and Recoil Spring - Install" in this manual.
