Troubleshooting Test Steps | Values | Results |
---|---|---|
1. Active Codes and Logged Codes A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes. Troubleshoot any active codes related to coolant temperature before continuing with this procedure. |
Diagnostic code |
Result: There are no active codes. Proceed to Test Step 2. Result: A diagnostic trouble code is active or logged. Troubleshoot any active or logged codes before continuing with this procedure. |
2. Check the Differential Pressure Sensor A. Check the insulation of the Differential pressure sensor. B. Check the Differential pressure sensor using the Sensor Signal (Analog, Active - Test. |
Deferential Pressure Sensor |
Result: The sensor is OK. Proceed to Test Step 3 for the 3936-2 code. Proceed to Test Step 4 for the 3936-7 code. Result: The sensor Failed. Repair: Repair or replace the Differential pressure sensor. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3. |
3. Inspect the DPF Core A. Remove DPF and inspect core for damage or cracks |
DPF |
Result: The DPF is OK. Repair: Reassemble DPF following Disassembly and Assembly restart at Test Step 1 to see if code is still present. Clear codes and check whether code comes back. If present continue Test Steps 1 through 3 again. Result: The DPF is Damaged. Repair: Replace the DPF. |
4. Check the Air Intake and the DPF Assembly A. Check the air intake filter for blockage. B. Check intake air path for leakage (Hose Clamps, Hoses, Turbo, EGR Valve). |
Air Intake |
Result: The air filter is clean and the intake air does not leak. Proceed to Step 5. Result: The air filter is plugged. Repair: Clean or replace the air filter. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5. Result: The intake air does have leaks. Repair: Replace damaged component. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5. |
5. Check the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Installation A. Check for damage to harness or sensor. |
Gas Temperature Sensors (T0, T1, T2) |
Result: The sensors are OK. Proceed to Step 6. Result: The sensor(s) are damaged. Repair: Repair or replace the damaged sensor(s). If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6. |
6. Check the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors A. Check Exhaust Gas Temperature sensor using Sensor Signal (Analog, Active)-Test. |
Gas Temperature Sensors (T0, T1, T2) |
Result: The sensors are OK. Repair: Restart at Test Step 1 to see if code is still present. Clear codes and check whether code comes back. If present continue Test Steps 1 through 6 again. Result: The sensor(s) are damaged. Repair: Repair or replace the damaged sensor(s). |
