Perform the following procedure to flash program the ECM. The ECM is flashed to upgrade the software. Flash programming of the ECM must also be done if the ECM has been replaced. The Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) contains the program WinFlash. WinFlash is used to load software into the ECM. The following procedure is used to flash software into the ECM. The software on the PL042 cellular radio cannot be updated by the user.
The software can also be updated remotely by Caterpillar Service Engineering for PLE742 systems. To make a remote flash of the Product Link device request, the TC can enter a "Product Technology" service request through the PSCRM system. When submitting the DSN request, the statement must read "I confirm that consent has been obtained from the customer for the following list of serial numbers, for the Product Link device to be remotely flashed by Caterpillar". Then follow that statement with a complete list of serial numbers or upload the list as an attachment.
- Flash program the ECM.
Note: This procedure is only done through the 425-6889 Cable As and not a 317-7484 Communication Adapter Gp.
- Connect the 425-6889 Cable As to the laptop and 9-pin service port connector on the PLE702 harness.
- Open Cat ET.

Note: When the PLE702 Network Manager comes equipped on a piece of Cat equipment, the software is already installed. The PLE702 Network Manager will arrive blank when ordered from the parts system. The first time that you connect to a PLE742 system, with a PLE702 Network Manager that is blank, the radio will not be detected. The PLE702 Network Manager must first be flashed in order for the radio to be detected. Once the PL641 is detected, then the radio can be flashed.
Note: Typical software installation can take up to 15 minutes, and may appear to stop at 45 percent. The flash will continue on its own. Actual flash times may vary.
Note: After the flash is complete, reset the preferences that were changed in Step 1.d.
