The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET)

Connections for the Communication Adapter III and the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET)
The components that are needed to use the Communication Adapter III and the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool are:
(1) Cable
(2) 317-7484 Communication Adapter Gp
(3) 457-6114 Cable As
(4) Current version of Cat ET program software and an IBM-COMPATIBLE personal computer

Cat®Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool is a software program that is used to access data. The service technician can use Cat ET to perform maintenance on the machine. Some of the options that are available with Cat ET are listed below:

  • View the active diagnostic codes and active event codes. View the logged diagnostic codes and the logged event codes. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Determining Diagnostic Trouble Codes".

  • View the status of parameters.

  • Perform calibrations of machine systems.

  • Program (Flash) the ECM using the "WINflash" program. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Module - Flash Program".

  • Print reports.

The following list contains some of the diagnostic functions and programming functions that are performed by the service tools.

  • The failures of the ECM system are displayed.

  • The status of most of the inputs and the outputs are displayed.

  • The settings for the ECM are displayed.

  • Display the status of the input and output parameters in real time.

  • Display the clock hour of the internal diagnostic clock.

  • The number of occurrences and the clock hour of the first occurrence and the last occurrence is displayed for each logged diagnostic code.

  • The description for each logged event and each active event is displayed. The description for each logged diagnostic and each active diagnostic is displayed.

  • Load new FLASH software.

An indicator for logged events is provided. The indicator allows the service technician to track event codes that are intermittent. The data for the logged event will include the following information:

  • An event identifier (EID)

  • A text description of the problem

  • The number of occurrences of the problem

  • A time stamp will display the first occurrence of the problem.

  • A time stamp will display the last occurrence of the problem.

Refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" for the list of diagnostic codes for the ECM.

Status Groups For The Electronic Technician

The Status groups are lists of machine parameters. The status of the parameters is shown in real time.

Monitoring System Display

The monitoring system display can display events and codes in the service mode. The codes and events are reported by an ECM.

The diagnostic codes and events can be viewed in the service mode. Access the service mode by using the following steps.

  1. Go to the main menu by pressing the menu button (4).

    "Main Menu" will appear as the Menu Option (5).

  2. Use the Four-Way button (1) to scroll to the "Service" menu.

  3. Press the "OK" button to view the service menu.

  4. From the service menu, access the diagnostic mode with the "OK" button (2).

    The events, active codes, and logged codes will now be displayed.

    View the codes and events in more detail by pressing the "OK" button again.

    View all codes and events on the list by pressing the Four-Way button (1).

  5. Press the Menu button (4) or the Back button (3) to exit the service mode.
