SUBJECT: Oil Carryover from the Side-Mounted Breather
PROBLEM:
The side-mounted breather may be allowing oil carryover to pass through to the outside of the engine. Oil that is passed through the breather could cause oil to drip from the breather tube.
SOLUTION:
Perform the following checks if the oil is leaking from the side-mounted breather.
Ensure that the oil level is correct. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil Level Gauge - Calibrate" for the correct procedure.
If the oil level is correct, perform the following steps outlined below with the side cover still installed on the engine:
- Remove the composite breather element.
- Measure and record the minimum distance between the baffle and the cylinder block.
- If the distance is less than 16 mm (0.625 inch), use a 0.625-inch diameter rod to bend the baffle in order to obtain the minimum dimension.
If the side cover has been removed from the engine for another reason, perform the following steps outlined below in order to check the baffle:
