SE60 V Asphalt Screed Machine System Caterpillar

Screed Plate - Check and Adjust

Usage:

SE60 V JJ3

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

In order to prevent personal injury from accidental screed movement, lock the screed in the RAISED position by using the service lock lever to extend the lock pins after the screed is fully raised.

Introduction

This procedure outlines the methods used to level the main screed plate and extender plates. Also included in this procedure is the method used to set the proper angle of attack for the main screed and extenders.

Required Tools

Test Preparation

  1. Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface. Refer to the tractor Operation and Maintenance Manual for the proper operating procedure.

  1. Raise the screed and allow the tow arms to rest on two screed service locks (1) .

    Illustration 2g03779879

  1. Lower the right and left tow points (2) to the lowest point.

    Illustration 3g03779884

  1. Use Tool (C) to measure the distance between barrel (3) of the tow point cylinder and the end of cylinder rod (4). Perform this measurement on both sides of the machine. If the distance is not equal, adjust the tow points as required until both sides are equal.

Check Procedure

    Illustration 4g03779891

  1. Use Tool (C) to measure the distance between drop arm face (6) and slope box face (5). The distance should be 507 ± 2 mm (20 ± 0.08 inch) on both sides of the screed.

    Illustration 5g03779896

  1. If the distance is incorrect, use thickness screw adjustment handle (7) to set the face to face measurement.

    Illustration 6g03779902

  1. Verify that there is no crown in the main screed.

    1. Place Tool (A) across the width of main screed plate (8) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) behind the leading edge.

    1. Place two of Tool (B) between Tool (A) and the screed plate. Locate each Tool (B) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) from the ends of main screed plate (8) .

      Illustration 7g03779910

    1. Use a third Tool (B) as a gauge in order to check the gap between the screed plate and Tool (A). This check should be taken at the center of main screed plate (8) .

    Illustration 8g03779920

  1. Use crown increase switch (9) and crown decrease switch (10) to adjust the crown. The space between Tool (A) and Tool (B) should be equal at all three locations.

    Illustration 9g03779925

  1. Place Tool (A) across the width of main screed plate (8) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) in front of the trailing edge.

  1. Place two of Tool (B) between Tool (A) and main screed plate (8). Locate each Tool (B) below the first adjuster at each end of the main screed plate.

    Illustration 10g03779944

  1. Use a third Tool (B) as a gauge in order to check the gap between main screed plate (8) and Tool (A). This check should be taken below each adjuster. Check from the outer edges of the main screed plate to the center of the main screed plate.

  1. If the trailing edge of the main screed plate is flat and straight, go to Step 9. If the trailing edge of the main screed plate is not flat and straight, go to "Adjustment Procedure", "Trailing Edge Adjustment".

  1. Remove tooling.

Adjustment Procedure

Trailing Edge Adjustment

    Illustration 11g03779951

  1. Use extender proportional extender switch (11) to extend the right and left extenders.

    Illustration 12g03779957

  1. Retract the inner trailing edge adjusters (13) and outer trailing edge adjusters (12) .

  1. Use inner trailing edge adjusters (13) to set the flatness of the trailing edge. Do not disturb outer trailing edge adjusters (12). Start at the second trailing edge adjuster in from each side and move to the center.

    Illustration 13g03779984

  1. Loosen nut (14) on top of inner trailing edge adjusters (13) only. Turn the trailing edge adjuster counterclockwise to retract the adjuster. Turn the trailing edge adjuster clockwise to extend the adjuster. Flatten the trailing edge of the main screed plate relative to Tool (A) .

  1. Tighten nut (14) .

  1. Remove tooling.

Reset the Scales

    Illustration 15g03824340

  1. Loosen bolts (17) and move crown scale (15) so the zero mark aligns with pointer (16) .
