Procedure to Retrofit a Single Window Wiper to Dual Window Wipers on 770G and 772G Off-Highway Trucks{7305}

Usage:

770G ECM
Off-Highway Truck:
770G (S/N: ECM1-264)
772G (S/N: LTS1-357)

Introduction

The following instructions provide the needed information to retrofit a 770G or 772G cab with a single-window wiper to dual window wipers.

Safety

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine movement.

Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels to make sure the machine does not move while the parking brakes are disengaged.

----------------------


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Prepare the Machine

    Note: Permit only one operator on the machine. Either keep other personnel away from the machine, or keep other personnel in the sight of the operator.

  1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from any machines that are working and any personnel.

  1. Move the transmission control to the P position.

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  1. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8491, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".

  1. Remove nut (B) and lockwasher (C) that secures window wiper arm group (A). Disconnect window wiper arm group (A) hose from connector assembly (D). Discard window wiper arm group (A), nut (B), and lockwasher (C) .

  1. Remove cowling assembly (E). Retain cowling assembly (E) and all mounting hardware.

    (D) 8T-5400 Connector As

  1. Loosen the nut that secures connector assembly (D). Rotate connector assembly (D) 90 degrees clockwise. Retighten the nut to secure connector assembly (D) to a torque of 0.35 ± 0.05 N·m (3 ± 0.44 lb in).

  1. Remove the hardware from the motor group. Remove rubber shaft (F), nut (G), plastic washer (H), and rubber washer (J). Retain all the hardware.

  1. Remove bolt (K) and washer (L) .

    Note: Leave the motor group in place.

  1. Position template (1) onto the front of the cab.

  1. Secure template (1) to the front of the cab by using rubber shaft (F), nut (G), plastic washer (H), rubber washer (J), bolt (K), and washer (L) .

    (AA) 6 mm (0.236 inch) hole (three places)

  1. Align four bosses (2) to the notches in template (1). Mark the locations of bosses (2) and three holes (AA) .

  1. Remove bosses (2), template (1), and the hardware that secures template (1). Discard template (1), the mounting hardware, and the motor group.

  1. Drill three 6 mm (0.236 inch) holes in areas (AA) .

  1. Prepare the areas marked for bosses (2) for welding. Remove all paint, dirt, debris, or grease.

    Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1841, "General Welding Procedures"

  1. Tack weld four bosses (2) to the plate.

    Repaint the area, as needed.

    (3) 437-2321 Template As

  1. Secure template (3) to the front of the cab by using the three bolts shipped with the new 328-2264 Window Wiper Motor Gp .

  1. Mark the location of the 22 mm (0.866 inch) diameter hole in the center of template (3). Remove template (3) and the mounting hardware. Drill a 22 mm (0.866 inch) diameter hole at the location marked.

  1. Repeat Step 13.

  1. Check the alignment of the drilled holes and bosses (2). Secure cover assembly (4) to bosses (2) by using four bolts (5) and four hard washers (6). If the bolts, holes, and bosses do not align properly, make adjustments, as needed.

  1. Remove and retain cover assembly (4), bolts (5), and hard washers (6) .

    Remove and discard template assembly (3). Retain the bolts from template assembly (3) .

  1. Seal the available hole by using bolt (7), washer (8), washer (9), and nut (10) .

    Note: Bolt (7) and washer (8) should be on the outside of the plate. Washer (9) and nut (10) should be on the inside of the plate.

  1. Secure window wiper motor group (11) to the cab by using the three bolts provided with window wiper motor group (11).

    Note: Tighten the bolts to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (106 ± 26 lb in).

    Note: Two people are required.

    (BB) Nut

  1. Remove the cap ends and remove nuts (BB) from window wiper arm group (12) .

  1. Insert window wiper arm group (12) into cover assembly (4). In two places, hold the inner nut steady and secure window wiper arm group to cover assembly (4). Tighten nut (BB) to a torque of 38 ± 2 N·m (28 ± 1.5 lb ft).

  1. Secure two plastic caps (CC) onto window wiper arm group (12). Finger tighten plastic caps (CC) .

  1. Clean the area around the hole in the back of cover assembly (4) for the location of gasket (13) with alcohol and let dry. Adhere gasket (13) to the back of cover assembly (4) .

  1. Secure cover assembly (4) to four bosses (2) by using four bolts (5) and four hard washers (6). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7.4 lb ft).

    Note: The link ends should be removed from the ball studs at the motor crank of window wiper arm group (12) .

    (DD) Nut and washer from window wiper motor group

  1. Secure window wiper arm group (12) to window wiper motor group by using nut and washer (DD) from window wiper motor group (11) .

    Note: Hold the motor crank steady, and tighten the nut to a torque of 20 ± 2 N·m (177 ± 17 lb in).

    Reassemble the link ends and ball studs for window wiper arm group (12) .

  1. Clean the area around the top hole on cover assembly (4) with alcohol and let the alcohol dry.

  1. Adhere seal (14) around the top hole.

  1. Secure two plates (15), plate (16), and plate (17) to cover assembly (4) by using 12 bolts (7) and 12 washers (9) .

  1. Connect 138 ± 5 mm (5.43 ± 0.19 inch) of hose (18) to connector assembly (D) .

    Insert tee (19) to hose (18). Connect a 400 ± 5 mm (15.75 ± 0.19 inch) and a 281 ± 5 mm (11.06 ± 0.19 inch) hose (18) to tee (19).

    Insert one connector (21) into the end of each hose (18) .


    NOTICE

    Do not overtighten cable straps (20). Cable straps (20) should secure, but not constrict the hoses.


  1. Secure hose (18) to cover assembly (4) by using three cable straps (20) .

  1. Secure two window wiper arm groups (22) to the window wiper arm group by using the nut and washer from the window wiper arm group.

    Note: Do not final tighten.

  1. Connect the hoses from window wiper arm groups (22) to connectors (21) .

  1. Connect wiper blade (23) and wiper blade (24) to window wiper arm groups (22) .

  1. Ensure that the wipers are located at the correct distance from the bottom of the front window and tighten the nuts to secure the wipers. Tighten nuts to a torque of 24 ± 1 N·m (212 ± 9 lb in).

    Wait a minimum of 30 minutes, then retighten the nuts to 24 ± 1 N·m (212 ± 9 lb in).

  1. Adjust the jets of the washer nozzles by using 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch) wire so that the jets spray to the locations shown in Illustration 21.

  1. Enlarge the notch in cowling assembly (E) that was removed in Step 2. Refer to Illustration 24 for the dimensions.

  1. Reinstall cowling assembly (E) that was removed in Step 2 and modified in Step 37.
