Start By:

  1. Remove the electric starting motor.

  2. Remove piston pump (brake, ejector, and fan).

  3. Remove piston pump (steering).

  4. Remove gear pump (output transfer gear).

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

  2. Drain the transmission. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Oil - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

  3. Disconnect hose assembly (2) from the transmission. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) from gear pump (ATTAC fan) (4). Remove bolts (3) and washers. Remove gear pump (ATTAC fan) (4) and the O-ring seal.

  4. Note the location of cable straps (6) and remove. Set hose assemblies (5) to the left side of the machine. Remove tube assemblies (7) and the O-ring seals.

  5. Remove bolt (8), the nut, and the washers. Disconnect hose assembly (10). Set hose assemblies (9) to the side.

  6. Disconnect brackets (11). Loosen clamps (14) and (12). Position tube (13) to the right side of right transmission mount.

  7. Remove bolt (17), the nut, and the washers. Disconnect harness assembly (19). Remove bolts (21) and the washers. Position bracket assembly (18) with the transmission.

  8. Position bracket (20) and reinstall bolts (21) and the washers. Tighten bolts (21) to a torque of 125 ± 20 N·m (92 ± 15 lb ft).

  9. Remove clip (16) and cable strap (15).

  10. Remove bolt (22), the nut, and the washers. Remove bolt (24) and the retainer. Set tube assembly (23) to the front of the machine.

  12. Attach a suitable lifting device to main drive shaft (27). Remove bolts (26).

  13. Lower main drive shaft (27) onto suitable cribbing (28) positioned on top of the front axle.

  14. Disconnect transmission oil filter tube assemblies (29) from the transmission.

  15. Remove tube assemblies (30). Disconnect tube assembly (31).

  16. Remove hose assembly (32). Disconnect hose assembly (33).

  17. Use Tooling (A) to rotate the engine, transmission, and torque converter.

    Note: Place identification marks on the plate and the housing for installation purposes.

  18. Remove plug (34).

  19. Remove bolts (35).

  20. Install Tooling (B) and Tooling (C). Install Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to support the engine.

  21. The weight of the engine is approximately 1406 kg (3100 lb).

  22. Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to transmission (36). The weight of transmission (36) is approximately 590 kg (1300 lb). Remove transmission housing to engine bolts (37).

  23. Remove bolt (38), the washers, and the mounts. Repeat for the opposite side.

  24. Remove bolts (40). Remove left mount (39).

  25. Remove transmission (36).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install transmission (36) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Apply Tooling (F) to the threads of bolts (35). Tighten bolts (35) to standard torque.

    2. Tighten bolts (26) to a torque of 117 ± 10 N·m (86 ± 7 lb ft).

    3. Tighten bolts (21) to a torque of 125 ± 20 N·m (92 ± 15 lb ft).
