Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

VIMS can fail to initialize communications with managed ethernet switches consistently when the switch is powered after VIMS starts up. If the switch is not active during start-up and shutdown, Cat® MineStar Fleet Onboard "Start Up" and "Shut Down" messages will also not be present.

Additionally the wireless MineStar radio or access point on the machine should be powered using unswitched power. This will allow for proper data transmission during the startup and shut down periods. Use of the "$ Minestar Connectivity Check" will also aide in ensuring that proper messaging with the office is established.

Solution

For Ethernet Switches

Use the MineStar 101 unswitched power wire or an equivalent unswitched power source to power the Ethernet switch. If an equivalent is used, ensure that proper circuit protection is installed. Powering the switch with unswitched power will prevent initialization issues and allow for the proper shut down and start up messages to be broadcast from Fleet Onboard. Unswitched power should be used for both managed and unmanaged switches and both the 362-0169 Electronic Control Module and customer provided switches when used with MineStar products.

The MineStar 101 wire will be red in color and can be found in the "A" position of a MineStar power connector as shown in Illustration 1.

Illustration 2g03591149

If you are using a Caterpillar Ethernet Switch ( 362-0169 Electronic Control Module ), you will need to change the position of the 105-Brown in the 378-7960 Wiring Harness from the "C" position to the "A" position as seen in Illustration 2.

If no extra connections are available, a power wye such as 378-7961 Power Harness As can be used to provide unswitched to the Ethernet switch. See Illustration 3.

For Wireless Access Points and MineStar Radios

The same procedure as above can also be utilized for Wireless Access Points and MineStar Radios. Use MineStar 101 unswitched power wire or an equivalent unswitched power source to power the Ethernet switch. If an equivalent is used, ensure that proper circuit protection is installed. Powering the switch with unswitched power will prevent initialization issues and allow for the proper shut down and start up messages to be broadcast from Fleet Onboard.
