The onboard USB tool can be used primarily by service personnel to perform the following tasks:
- Configuration backup and restore
- Image creation and restore
- System state backup and restore
- File management
The onboard USB tool consists of a software component which is pre-installed within the Terrain for drilling software. The hardware component is an off the shelf USB removable key.
Note: The V7 system is tested with USB drives up to 16Gb formatted in FAT32.
The onboard USB tool does not require any software to be loaded on the USB drive. The USB key can be the same key that is configured as the USB image tool.
Note: Ensure that the USB drive does not have any software or hardware safety locks enabled.
Depending on the USB drive, the system may take up to 1 minute to detect the USB drive.
If the system does not detect the USB drive, remove the USB drive, reboot the system, and try again. If the system still does not detect the USB drive, try formatting the USB drive in FAT32 or try another USB drive.
Best Practices
Adhere to the following conditions for best performance:
- Do not insert the USB drive before or during system startup as the USB drive may not be properly detected.
- Do not insert the USB drive if the system is not in the main application screen. This action will cause the USB Tool screens to not properly load.
- Should the system stop responding (that is, freeze) after inserting or removing the USB drive, a system "Keyswitch" shutdown will be necessary.
- While the USB Tool is in use, the system application will still run in the background and continue to collect data.
- Follow the onscreen instructions before removing the USB drive.
- Removing the USB drive too early or while in use can cause file corruption on the USB drive or even render the USB drive inoperable.
- After removing the USB drive, wait a minimum of 60 seconds before reinserting the USB drive.
- The USB Tool is password protected. This information is saved onboard the system configuration.
Configuration Backup
A configuration backup contains all the necessary configuration and calibration files. Restoring a configuration backup file will rewrite the entire configuration and calibration files back to how it was when the configuration backup was taken.
A configuration backup should be performed in the following situations:
- After initial setup and configuration of the machine
- Anytime a module is recalibrated
- Anytime a setting on board the machine changes
The following terms are types of configurations:
User Configurations - This configuration backs up operator, work and delay codes, safety check lists, and operator custom configuration.
All Configurations - This configuration backs up all the configuration files which contain system settings and calibrations.
Images - This configuration backs up the whole system disk which includes the OS, the Terrain for Drilling application and all the configurations.

- Press the arrow button in the desired configuration section to create the backup file on the USB key. The system prompts for a file name.
Backup/Restore System State
The "Backup/Restore system state" option may be used in order to back up and restore a system for troubleshooting purposes.
A backup of the system state contains the following information:
- All configurations
- Onboard screen reports
- Productivity files
- Onboard lists (.mwf files)
- Map (pattern and artifacts)
- Desk values (operator delay code, head position
File Management
The "File Management" option may be used to download and upload the following types of onboard files with the use of the USB drive:
- Map files
- Configuration files
