Special Handling Information And Installation Instructions For Crankshaft Seal Groups That Have Hydrodynamic Grooves In The Sealing Lip{1160, 1161}

Usage:

3200, 3300, 3400, 3500 Series Engines

The new seal groups are quite different from the former standard lip-type seals. The difference is the hydrodynamic grooves in the sealing lip of the new seal. These grooves in the seal lip move lubrication oil back into the engine crankcase as the crankshaft turns. Because of this seal lip design, the front seal for an engine is different from the rear seal group. The installed position of the seal lip grooves is important, because the grooves are very sensitive to the direction of crankshaft rotation. Each seal is marked with an arrow to show the direction of shaft rotation for which the seal can be used. If a specific seal group is installed on the wrong end of an engine, lubrication oil can actually be taken out of an engine, because the grooves in the seal lip are in the wrong direction in relation to crankshaft rotation. Special handling procedures and seal installation instructions for specific engines are given on the pages that follow.

1 Use The Correct Tools For Seal Group Installation

Some additional new tools, along with some existing tools, are needed to install the seal groups. Be sure to use the correct installation tools to maintain the necessary seal-to-wear sleeve relationship.

2 Separation Of The Seal From The Sleeve Is Not Permissible

The material in the large lip of the seal can be damaged easily. Fingers, fingernails, wires or the edge of the sleeve can put a scratch on the surface of the seal lip. It is possible that a scratch or a rub (which can not be seen) from a finger, can damage the seal enough that it can not be used. In these seal groups, the sleeve is installed in the seal, by the seal group supplier, for two very good reasons, as follows:

A. To give better protection to the special material on the seal lip.
B. To make for easier installation. The seal and the sleeve are installed, both at the same time.

3 Once There Is Separation Of A Seal And Sleeve, They Must Not Be Used Again

Once there is separation of a sleeve and seal, one from the other, they can not be used again. When you try to put the seal on the sleeve, or the sleeve in the seal, the sleeve will always damage the seal, and neither part can be used again. Always install a new seal group if there is separation of these two parts.

4 Used Seal Groups - Do Not Use Again

During the disassembly procedure for engine reconditioning, the seal is separated from the wear sleeve. This means that the sleeve must not be used again. The lip of the seal will be damaged if it is installed over the wear sleeve. Destroy the original wear sleeve and seal. Install the correct seal group at time of engine assembly.

5 Install Only Those Seal Groups That Are Still Assembled By The Seal Group Supplier

See items 2, 3 and 4. If during group installation, there is separation of the seal from the wear sleeve, remove and destroy both parts. Install a new seal group.

6 Seal Groups Are To Be Installed Dry (No Lubrication)

Do not use any type of lubrication during installation of the seal group. The seal group will install quite easily without lubrication, if the correct tools and procedure are used for the installation.

NOTE: If any type of lubrication is used in the installation of the seal group, the result can be an early failure of the seal.

4 Some models of the 3400 Series Engine have a front housing that has a counterbore for installation of the original equipment part number crankshaft seal. A new style crankshaft seal group (see front page for description) can not be installed as a replacement front seal for these engines unless a modification is made to the seal counterbore in the front housing. See the list that follows for the effected models.

This front housing can be modified to use the new seal group by increasing the size of the seal bore to 186.144 Ø ± 0.038 (7.3285" Ø ± .0015"). This bore size must go completely through the housing.

NOTE: For ONLY those housings that have been modified (see steps 4 and 5), use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the bore in the front housing, then put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter of the seal before it is installed.

6 Install the seal according to the procedure given in the previous steps of this topic.

2 Put the specific seal group on adapter (C). The chamfer on the inside diameter of the wear sleeve must be up (toward the mechanic).

3 Put 6V4001 Ring (8) over the bracket studs. Install the nuts on the studs, and tighten them evenly to push the seal into the adapter until the seal comes in contact with the bottom of the bore.

4 Use two 2N5006 Bolts (5) to fasten 6V4003 Locator (1) to the crankshaft. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.
