New Design of Cylinder Block and Main Bearings {1201,1203,1224}

Usage:

Caterpillar Machines Powered By 3116 Engines

Description of Change: Beginning in mid 1998, the 3116 Cylinder Block design was changed in order to eliminate machining of lubrication grooves in the main bearing saddles. Consequently, 107-7708 Main Bearings with a lubrication groove in the inner surface of the bearing will be used on the 3116 Machine Engine. This groove in the main bearing provides an oil path that used to be provided by the grooves in the bearing saddles. The main bearing tab slots were also changed. These design changes make the main bearing saddles and tab slots of the 3116 Cylinder Block identical to the main bearing saddles and tab slots in the 3126 Cylinder Block. Because of this design change, the 3116 Machine Engine and the 3126 Machine Engine now use the same main bearings.

Adaptable To: This design change became effective on 3116 Machine Engines in mid 1998.

The part number for later model 3116 Cylinder Blocks that do not have lubrication grooves in the main bearing saddles is:

* 149-5401

The part numbers for earlier model 3116 Cylinder Blocks that have lubrication grooves in the main bearing saddles are:

* 7C-3346
* 101-3242
* 101-4496
* 129-1094

The cylinder block part number is located on the right hand side (exhaust manifold side) of the cylinder block casting.

(A) Front face of earlier model cylinder block with lubrication grooves.
(B) Front face of later model cylinder block without lubrication grooves.
(C) Main bearing saddle with lubrication grooves.
(D) Main bearing saddle without lubrication grooves.

The cylinder blocks can also be identified by inspecting the main bearing saddles.

* The later model cylinder blocks will not have any lubrication grooves machined in the main bearing saddles.
* The earlier model cylinder blocks manufactured before this design change will have lubrication grooves machined in the main bearing saddles.

(B) 107-7602 Main Thrust Bearing.
(C) 107-7708 Main Bearing (with lubrication groove).

(B) 107-7602 Main Thrust Bearing.

Later model 3116 Machine Engines with the 149-5401 Cylinder Block (without lubrication grooves) use six of the 107-7708 Main Bearings and one 107-7602 Main Thrust Bearing. Earlier model 3116 Machine Engines (with lubrication grooves) use three 107-7708 Main Bearings on journals 2, 3, and 5; three 101-1530 Main Bearings on journals 1, 4, and 7; and one 107-7602 Main Thrust Bearing on journal 6. Because of the difference in bearing tab and tab slot locations in the cylinder block, main bearings cannot be accidentally interchanged between the two different styles of cylinder blocks. When replacing main bearings, refer to the following chart.
