Caterpillar Hydraulic Cylinders Using Chevron Packing Seals

Reference: Special Instruction, SEHS9950, Installation Of U-Cup Seal With Spacer(s).

Description of Change: A new U-cup seal and spacer(s) replace the discontinued Chevron packing seal used on many hydraulic cylinder groups. Chevron packing seals require shims to adjust the seal retainer to prevent leakage. The new U-cup seal and spacer(s) require no shims or adjustment.

NOTE: The part numbers for the new U-cup and spacer(s) are identical to the part numbers for the Chevron packing seal.

Adaptable To: The new U-cup and spacer(s) are adaptable to Caterpillar hydraulic cylinders using the Chevron packing seal.

Installation Procedure

* View A

1. Disassemble hydraulic cylinder group.

2. Remove retainer (D), Chevron packing seal (C), and shims. Keep retainer (D) for later use.

* View E

3. Slide retainer (D), spacer(s) (G), and new U-cup seal (F) onto cylinder rod.

4. Slide head (B) onto cylinder rod.

5. Using the retainer (D), push spacer(s) and new U-cup seal into the seal bore of the cylinder head (B) until the retainer flange is against the cylinder head.

NOTE: The resulting gap in the seal bore is normal.

6. Bolt retainer (D) to cylinder head (B).
